Hey all! For those of you that have welcomed me to Ifish, and those of you who haven't yet...here is the story that goes with the pic (trophy page...siletz'n), of my big blacktail that I got this past season.........It was Sunday, Oct. 26th, my buddy and I were up at o'dark 30 to head out deer hunting. Up to that point we had already filled our doe tags for the Willamette unit. In fact his doe, was his first deer. We were hoping to get him his first buck on this particular morning. We were heading to an area above Falls City, on the Blackrock side, that I had hunted 3 yrs. prior. I have a "secret spot" that, at that time, wasn't too over grown, and had seen a good number of deer in it. Never did connect though. I was going to do some pushing for him in this spot, in the hopes that a buck would present itself for a shot. The spot itself is around 50-75 acres big, with a series of draws and benches in the middle. Most aren't too deep, or large, but have a lot of good cover. There are a couple of small streams that cut down the middle and NW side of the "clearcut". When we got there, we still had about an hour before daylight, so I took him to where I was going to have him sit on a stand. We sat and talked over the game plan for a few minutes, making sure we were on the same page. I then hiked up to the top and waited till it was light enough to see good. The plan was to work my way down the middle, and "toss" rocks that I had loaded my fanny pack with. When there are only 2 of you, this is a great way to push by yourself. Mr. Murphy decided to tag along with us that morning...As I was preparing to move out....Nature called....so needless to say that put me behind schedule. It was about 7am when I finally got going. My buddy was almost at the bottom end, so I had a ways to go. Then plan was to zig zag through the cut and toss rocks as I went. If anything were to run, it usually ran downhill. I've hunted here plenty and figured out what they tended to do. Well, it had been a few years since I had hunted here, and wasn't too surprised to see that it had grown up quite a bit. No problem though. There were still enough open spots that I still could see good, so I knew My buddy would be able to see as well. I started down, and got about a 3rd of the way in when I jumped some deer. I couldn't tell which way they ran, but knew they should run far with all this cover. So I kept pushing. Farther down, I stopped to glass some of the open areas to my right, which was across from my buddy. I see a doe trotting along an old skidder trail that ran along the NW stream. She was up where I was at, so I knew my buddy would not shoot if he saw a buck in close to where I was. As I was watching her through my scope (trying to grow horns on her), I heard a grunt and brush cracking behind where she had come from. My first thought was "I got you now bud...come on out and let me put you out of your misery, didn't your momma tell you not to chase the girls..they'll be the death of you." The first thing that I saw was his horns. My pulse rate went up...FAST. I dropped to one knee and waited for him to clear the brush he was behind. When he did, I whistled at him and he stopped. He locked eyes with me, and I let 'er rip. My .270 barked and he buckled. He started to run, but I knew it was a good hit. He went about 25 yards, and just like in the videos, he started to wobble a bit, and then he went down. My buddie thought that I had hurt myself trying to get to him, because of the fact that one could have heard me holler clear back to town. I got over to him, and he was gone...perfect double lung shot, right behind the shoulder. Now the fun starts......all down hill to the truck. I told my buddy, that when the buck looked at me, he was looking death in the eyes, and death was smiling. Come to think of it, I still am smiling. He green scored enough to make the book, but after the 60 days, and after deductions, he was just under the minimum. Oh well, still a great trophy. Oh yeah....he tastes great too. We waited to take the pic until I had him out of the heavier brush. This is one hunt I'll remember for a long time. What a morning.

Thank you, thank you! I know you can't tell very well in the pic, or the story (because I forgot to mention it), the buck was an almost spot on match 4x4 with eyegaurds. He even had a couple of stickers below the right eyeguard and 1 below the left. pretty cool. He dressed out at around 165-170lbs. Not bad for a coast range blacktail. Hey **** , if this who I think it is, I didn't know you were a member.

Good story Welcome.
Wish I could whistle like my Dad. Don't know how many deer he has stopped in their tracks by doing that then nailing them. Had to grin  reading that part of your story. Dale
