Was lucky to be able to go over to Eastern Washington on some privet land to hunt mule deer. Left the house Thursday at 6:00 PM and made the 4 hour drive to this land over in Eastern Washington right a long side the Columbia River.
Talk about it being dry over there! Dusty and everything. Can't see how the deer live over there but they do. Friday night we get up and go out driving around looking for some bucks for opening day Saturday. Seen lots of under size 2x2 and a few small 3x3s and 4x4s, nothing we really want. Well, at about 5:30 we spot a group of 3 big bucks. Oh they are nice looking bucks. The one big one was a 4x4 that was over 30 inch's wide. The other two were 24-26 inch wide bucks. We did not wanna spook them bucks so we left them a lone and headed home. Hoping that they would be there tomorrow. The next day, Saturday the 11th opening day of Deer Season! We end up going right to the spot were we seen the bucks the night before. They are not there. No were to be found. At about 7:45 I spot a buck. Not one of the ones we seen the day before but one real nice buck. Dad and I put the sneak on him and was able to get within 60 yards of him. He was with a group of smaller bucks. Like 5 or 6 smaller bucks with him. One shot on kill! My biggest buck ever. 4x4 with eye guards. So if you wanna, you can call him a 5x5 mule deer with a 21 inch spread! Gutted him out, took him back to the shop were we skinned him and did all the other work. With his legs, head, gutted and all trimmed up, he still weighted in at 150 pounds! Well, we take care of my deer and make sure everything is good to go back out and try to get my dads deer. Back out in the field we spot a small 3x3 that is about 30 yards out there. Just standing there. Way to small. If we wanted a buck that big we would have stayed home and shot one behind the house. So we pass him up and keep a going. Spot a few does after that but no bucks....no bucks with any size that is. Sunday, back out there looking for a shooter buck. At about 10:00 AM we spot two nice size bucks. One 3x3 buck and one 4x4 buck. Both have eye guards. The 3x3 has two real nice big forks and some big eye guards. The 4x4 is a little smaller then mine, but not much. We were about 500 yards from the two and with the wind a blowing as bad we knew we would not be able to take that shot. We moved around and was able to get within about 200 yards from the two. At that time the two jump up and about start to run when dad takes the shot and hits him but not very good. We get in the truck fly over there and we see the 3x3 about 1000 yards out there...the 4pt is not with him. So we know he must be down. We start looking around in the field and that's when we see him laying down. He is laying all the way down like he is dead. He playing with us. Dad walks over there to make sure he's dead and that sucker jumps up like two feet in front of him and took off a running. Dad waited till he started to slow down and then put the kill shot on him. The 3 of us all tagged out with mulies. Mine was the biggest of them all. I'm very pumped! Had a killer time. Seen lots of deer and coyotes! Hope I can go next year We have all shot black tails and what not. But hunting these mulies was way different. No trees any place. Just tall grass. Not two bad for two days of hunting I'll be posting pictures later tonight. [ 10-14-2003, 09:07 PM: Message edited by: KingFisher85 ]
