Default School of Fish

I've been doing this college thing for 2 years now and I've come to the conclusion that it is killing my fishing. I know its supposed to be the best time of my life, but I cant get any good fishing time in. For example, my seinior year of high school I hooked like 40 winter steelhead. Freshman and sophomore year of college combined only like 15.
Then to make matters worse my dad calls me and tells me thats he boated 2 springers the other day and 3 more two nights ago. How am I supposed to concentrate on school when all i want to do is go fishing?
Heres a little piece of advice for any fishermen who are looking fo a college to attend. FIND ONE NEAR GOOD FISHING! I dont mean an hour Im talking like 15-20 minuets so you can get out besides on the weekends. You'll be a lot happier if you do.

Sorry just had to get this out.

You need spend more time on the river. I skied 120 days a season while going to college in Montana.

Dedicate yourself now while you still do not have a career job to go everyday. Enjoy now before your soon to be family really cuts into your your free time.

Shoot I am in school too, and well, I think I get in a good amount of fishing, you just have go insane for finals. Right now I am working on three papers that total to about 40 pages. I suggest double up a little on topics and study NW fisheries for science and policy. It works pretty good for me. Oh yeah make your papers overlap a little.

I know it is hard though, with runs affecting each term. Spring always proves to be my most difficult term. That's why I take two night classes once a week and a bonehead class. Try it out!

College isn't so bad on my fishing habits. Usually I can get at lease one day off during the week with no class at all. This term and next I have Tuesdays and Thursdays off so I can get out at least twice during the week usually. The days that I do have class though its from 8 am till 6 pm usually. I made the decision that 3 hard days of class was well worth it if I can have two weekdays off. It's all about your priorities. My schedule wasn't always like that though. If I had Late or early classes I’d hit the river in the morning or afternoon. For me I used to say that on my days off I'd study all day long if I needed to but I usually ended up sleeping in and ******* away at least have the day. Now I just go fishing instead and do my work in the afternoon/evening. Get you business done first and have fun later. My motto for college is "Work hard and Play hard!"

I really screwed up not getting a day of no class during the week. It wouldnt have really mattered though because I still have weightlifting at 6:30 and practice at 2:30. Baseball and fishing are tough to juggle.

Hard Ball - I can relate. Senior year at O.C. - lots of time to fish and did alot of catching. Fished before school and after school and sometimes during school. The next fall I went to Willamette U. and got crushed with studies - All the while my dad and my friends are hammering the fish. It is a killer to hear great fishing reports and you can't get out. I had to make a decision to eather spend my time studying or fishing. So after I cashed in a couple of D+ and a hefty student loan debt for a year and a half, I decided to transfer to OSU where I actually learned how to balance fishing with my studies.

Not sure where you are going to school and if you are playing ball too, I am sure your time is real limited. My advice - Work your a$$ off now and get a good paying job that lets you fish alot. It will all be worth it. Good Luck.

By the way - where are you going to school?

I dunno... the only time in my life I DIDN'T fish constantly was in college (Butte, MT) and it's probably a good thing... I met my wife there and she probably would have never married me if she only knew my addiction!

Luckily she's a real keeper and lets me fish a LOT even though she doesn't like fishing. It was kind of a shock to her system for the first five years or so...

Be smart, stay smart. School ,school ,school. Make alot of dough from the great education you are getting and you'll have a lifetime to catch fish. Don't make me come over there( where-ever there is) and smack you up side the coconut.

Be patient. School first and fish later. .....Oh by the way we banged three springers today. and lost two, wish you were there........

Just kidding, I couldn't catch a fish if you threw it at me.

Hang in BCF

If you go to college and do well and get a great career and make enough money to retire really early than all your time and effort and missed fishing time was worth while because then you can spend the rest of your life fishing.

I too am a full timer at OSU, Oh man is it tough, I do make due though, this will help.
Guide to Springer season While in college
In May the list includes, buying bulk packs of 5/0 Gami Octipus's instead of cheap beer, (its much easier to steal your roomates beer)uhhh...sleep, who needs it, study at night when its dark and you cannot fish. go to school in the morning, fish the rest of the day study all night! Lets see, what else oh yeah, take a spool of maxima, and the hooks you bought to class, dont worry the cute chick next to you will think you are popular for tying egg loops while listening to a bio lecture. Convince your parents that you need more money for uhhhh....(insert nesesity here) it helps if you talk to your mom, not your dad, spend said money on Ammermans eggs, tell parents you spent it on toilet paper, a book, etc... Make freinds with someone in your class, that doesnt fish, be nice to them and invite them over to drink your roomates beer, then when you skip when its red hot, they will cover for you.
And by all means do not have a Girlfriend during springer season, there are plenty of girls that will pretend to be your g/f for a night, and no one will be the wiser, theese "pretend girlfreinds" do not care if you go springer fishing in all of your spare time.
If i forgot anything let me know, and have a good springer season.

School is fun and important, but you have to find time to unwind.
During my Junior/Senior year, I got back into fishing.
During Grad school I fished everyday.
It can be done, you just have to decide whats important.
I found out that if I spent the time between classes studying and devoted Monday-Friday to school and not partying or hanging out.
I could spend all weekend fishing.
Heck I fished more in school and I did when I got out into
the workforce.

Enjoy it while you can, really; I definitely got in more quality fishing time while I was in skool than I do now with work, kids, etc. Most terms, I could engineer my class schedule so I'd have at least one full weekday free to dedicate entirely to fishing (seriously, timing was often the deciding factor which electives I did or didn't take), plus some weekend time mixed in. Now, i'm stuck going pretty much only on weekends or holidays when it's way more crowded, and often don't even get to spend a full day at it.

your priorities are different than mine...I quit playing sports after playing all the common school sports ALL year long from 2nd grade til nearly completing high school

David Johnson corrupted me..."Hey, let's go whack a springer" Me, ~Let's GO!! Wasn't much to twist my arm

catching fish and plain being on the river, was better than school IMHO and it worked for me

I'm about to graduate. I busted my ass the whole way through and still managed to fish like crazy. You gotta work it so your education is tailored to fishing. Think: independent research project. Get a student research grant to study the effects of catch and release on Mid-Willamette sturgeon. I'm not joking, you can pull this kind of stuff off in a jiffy. I go fishing with my profs, build fishing sculptures for my art requirement, and did a thesis on steelhead evolution. Last week I put some steelhead DNA in a machine, hit the Willy, caught a sturgeon while I read a math textbook, then returned to finish the reaction. Next day: springers at dawn w/ prof, school 9am -2pm, then back on the river til dark.
Unfortunately I can't help you with the concentrating on school thing... I can't shake the fish off my mind either. Good luck, hopefully there's a good Willamette plunking hole near your campus.

Why O' Why didn't I take a book with me while fishing...I don't get to sleep for the next 4 days! I am living vicariously through all of you that catch this weekend. This is my first weekend of not fishing since I did so well on my midterms....so I am fitting about half a term into the next week. It was worth it though
