WHOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! My heart is still beating so fast!!!
It is windy, rainy and yucky out, right now. The river, though, is coming up and is dirtying. I just had to try it! So, I took my fly rod out, and my little micro rod and mini quantum reel for a walk. (Oh yeah, Kilchis the dog, Dee Dee and Molly the cat came too!!!) Anyhow, threw a spruce fly for a while, but it's just too dirty. So, then... I slipped over the rocks to this little shute in the rapids, where I always think fish should hold, but never do much? And I cast the orange tiny rooster tail out into the strong current, and held it. When it stopped on it's own momentum, I started to reel in, reeeeel slowly! BAM! NOW THIS IS A FISH! After all summer of catching tiny little cutts around 12 inches at best, this thing was a REAL sea run cutt! It exploded out of the water! It was almost dark, and the flash of it's sides lit up the dusk like lightning! I struggled not to trip on my fly rod, and slipped down to the river side. (Literally!) Finally came to a spot where the current was less, and played that fish until it came home to Mama! After taking the hook out, (Came out easy, cuz this time of year I always cut the barbs, even on lures.) I lowered my rod down to the fish, in the water, and measured his tail to tip of nose, to the distance between two guides. It easily slopped over the distance. I could have kept fishing, but I HAD to know how huge this girl was! So, pinning my thumb to the spot past the guide, I found my other rod and hurried, slipping all over the place, to the back door. "BILL! GET THE MEASURING TAPE!" It measured out at 18 inches! It was SO fat, too! A fresh, 18 inch sea run cutt! GUESS WHAT COMES NEXT???? WHOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! My heart is still going "ka thump! Ka thump! I love real fish!!! I'm soaked to the bone, cuz I was just going to be out there "for a sec!" (laugh) Jen

It was such a riot to play that fish on that mini rod. I got that rod one day a couple years back when I went to Portland to buy an Easter Dress.
Came home with that, instead. See? It pays to not worry about fashion! Jen

Don't go to work! For heaven's sake, the river doesn't do this every day!
What IS IT about a cutthroat that gets me going, even more than a fourty pound salmon??? I think it's the patience that I endure for them, partially, and also the fact that pound for pound, those babies fight!

Way cool. Your right. Keep on pounding the river. What is ever waiting for you at home will still be there tomorrow.

Jennie-
One of the things that you might try some time over there is a pink or peach and white jig for those bigger cutts...my buddy and i were putting in some time after steelies on the 'tucca a while ago and he brought about a 4# cutt to the boat!!! it was a beautiful creature. -LUis

Yes, it is wonderful to have a river out there!
However, I don't know how "good" it's been, lately. Believe me, I have fished nearly every day since June, and caught VERY little! I have been a very patient fisher!!! Finally, FINALLY the river has something in it! Jen

WTG Jen!! Thanks for the report.
Chicken soup for this fishermans soul, for sure!! I can remember to this day, the first time my Dad took my brothers and me fishing for sea run cutts. I was about 8 or 9 years old. They fight great on lite tackle. Awsome fish. Peace, Tom

The Cutthroat is a beautiful fish. I used to come down and fish the lower Wilson in August and September for them. I would use a light fly outfit and a tied down caddis. You never knew what the size of the fish would be as their strike was always hard and quick. I have had four inchers hit like a freight train and then a fourteen incher would gently sip it up.
I miss those trips. Maybe now would be the time to take one again.
