Default wenaha archery

My wife drew a wenaha archery tag! I havent hunted this area and was wondering if anybody would like to share any info! Is a pack in necessary or is there enough elk around for day hikes?

Nope, road hunting should be good. Plenty of elk right off of the road.

That's great she should have a great hunt. I've never hunted there, been there looking a round a couple of times. My buddy and I drew walla walla archery tags this year. Use the se
arch button there is a ton of posts on wenaha. And good luck to her.

I was joking and kind of feel like a jerk now, just jealous Congrats to your wife. I would bet the getting back in as far as you can away from the other hunters would give you the best chance. But I know a few people who have had some close encounters with some nice bulls on day hunts. I know of a guy, granted in another Oregon premiere unit, who shot a trophy of a lifetime 200 yards off of the road. Right time, right place. Go get'em!

Have someone who knows how to set up and call em in with ya, and spend a day or two before the hunt traveling around with your ears on alert for a funny sound, a aroooeeee type sound. If it's followed by a couple grunts, bingo.

I took my kids to the Wenaha a few years ago when a friend had the tag. I called in 4 6x's to the road we walked down from camp and was back at the camper by 8am.

Thanks Travis... I just love the area and would want the same assistance if I was ever in a situation in which I may need it. Pay it forward!

I hope these wenaha tag holders at least share the outcome after the hunt. the long detailed wenaha thread with live updates was one of the best ifish threads ever.

for some fairly easy day hunts you could look at the luger springs area in the lookingglass drainage and even the lower swamp creek drainage. The wenaha drainage is larger and a little more time intensive. You can access the trails from timothy springs campground or elk flats area. The lower mottet drainage is pretty accessible and the area known as the sinks has some good bulls.

I was gonna say, that's not far off on Wenaha.

edit: ANd by the time I get a big bull tag I'll likely have to shoot from the road. Haha

I have fished that area quite often over the last fifteen years or so and done a little hunting up there as well. There are monster bulls in that unit. There is a guy from La Grande that had that tag and shot a 390's bull. Dont settle in that unit. Way too rare of a draw and lots of huge bulls!
