Default Fish Consumption Rates

A new fish consumption standard will be implemented in Washington State next year. It will increase the standard from 8oz of seafood a month. Tribes are suggesting 175g of seafood a day (the same as Oregon's new standard), but time will tell what the non-tribal government entities will propose.

This is good news for anyone who eats several meals of fish or other seafood a month. It is also good news for habitat protection and better control over pollution discharge.

"The state’s current fish consumption rate of 6.5 grams per day – about one 8-ounce seafood meal per month – is one of the lowest in the nation, despite the fact that Washington has one of the highest populations of seafood consumers. That rate has been in place for more than 20 years and is not protective of most residents, especially tribal members and others who consume large amounts of seafood. Furthermore, tribal treaty rights depend on fish and shellfish being safe to eat."

WOW... like GRB, I must be another hyper-consumer of seafood.

8 oz per month.... YGTBFKM, right?

If that's all the seafood the non-fishing JoeQ public is typically consuming, then maybe it's time to cut back commercial quotas for the tonnage dudes supposedly "fishing for the public".

BTW, ain't the tribes doin' that already?

WA DOE and other agency knows the amount isn't indicative of what most residents consume. Here's some more interesting information.

Investigate West has several more articles in the series on this.

I took the survey in that last link.

I'm consuming fish at 35 times the rate the state thinks is "average".

Maybe that's because you are catching fish at 35 times the average.

Eyefish isn't consuming Puget Sound caught fish and shellfish. He should be OK.

I eat 15X what WA says is average and most of it is from PS.

I have to die of something, right?
