Default Cardiff vs. Corvallis

A and I are trying to decide what I should get for new salmon reels for the driftboat and we're hearing different things. I thought I'd cloud it up by asking you fellas.

IMO, when I worked at Joe's, I got more Cardiffs returned than Corvallis. I didn't get many of either retunred, but it seemed like the Corvallis, even though they are the less expensive reel, never came back.

What do you guys think I should go with?

Oh, and don't say Calcutta's cause there's just no way that can happen.

Cardiffs are good reels for their price , but not sure about "Corvallis".

The Corvalus has more plastic inside than the Cardiff. The Cardiff has been rock solid and even landed a lot of tuna.

I have Corvalus on a couple of trolling rods, but wouldn't use them offshore.

Maybe it's just me, but I have had several annoying problems with my Cardiffs so that I don't trust them anymore. Never used the Corvalus.

I like the corvallis because I caught a lot of big kings in AK on them, but I did have 2 break in 3 summers of use(not bad in my idea) but I have also had both my Cardiff mess up and sold them.

I have 4 or 5 cardiffs and the only problem I have had with any of them is that the thumb bar wont pop back up if you push down on it really really light. You have to actually click it down, not press it like a 5 year old girl. I put smooth drags in them and they just keep fishing season after season. Are they as good as a Calcutta or Luna? No, but I would take the fit, finish, drag, and feel in the palm of your hand over a plastic abu any day of the week.

Calcuttas are nice, but the money you have to spend on a 401 is hard to swallow.

Both reels are a honest step above Abu's , with that being said the Shimano "Corvalus" Think you spent to much time in Corvallis , is the better reel. I have fished them in the past, and have buddies who still continue fishing them today without any problems. I fished the Cardiff YEARS and YEARS ago and they seem to fish similar to a Abu Garcia 6500 with a bit more shelf life. The Corvalus is a nice casting reel in terms of heavy drift fishing or bobber fishing, plug reel would be ideal as well.

I was going to buy a cardiff until I held it in my hand. For me when I hold the reel there is a plastic switch for turning on/off the clicker, that switch pokes me between my finger and thumb. Not comfortable at all. I would hold the reel to see if it bothers you as well.

I have a Cardiff 401 like the reel for the money. Don't think there is a ton of difference between the two just more plastic on the Corvallis.

I have four Corvalus 401's for salmon - two for fresh water, two for salt. Got each of them for a great sale price and have fished them hard for ten years. No issues with any of them. I gently rinse the saltwater ones after each use and back down the drags before I put them away. General oil and lube as needed and thorough cleaning every two to three years. Hope that helps.

P.S. you do need to be careful to not thumb down on the bar when setting the hook on a fish. Haven't had to learn that lesson the hard way, but I imagine it's happened to someone at some point.

My Cardiff has been to Ollie Damon's once and Troy's in Cascade Locks twice. Garbage! Drag is horrible and the bail release button has broke off twice. I've never fished a Corvallis because after the Cardiff I switched to Curado and have never looked back.

I have 2 400s and 2 401s. Have had them and fished them pretty hard for 6 years. Salmon and sturgeon. I haven't done one lick of maintenance on them them and they are still working flawlessly. The only thing I do is spray them with my garden hose and wipe them down after coming off of the salt.

Not to hi-jack, but are you stuck on Shimano? There are other reels that are superior IMO that might fit your price range.

I can't speak for the Corvalus, but I have 2 Cardiffs. My 301 has been to hell and back and still works flawlessly. I haven't spent much time with my 401, so I hope it performs as well as my 301.

Personally, I think Cardiffs are an excellent reel for the price.

I know corvallis' are not the most high end reel so I can't expect them to perform as if they were. But the one I fished with I hated. Felt very cheap, to much plastic. I know alot of people that like the cardiff, which I have never fished.

Thanks for the info guys. So far, it seems like the Corvalus is disliked because it "feels" or "looks" cheep, but those that use them regularly seems happy with them.
The Cardiff reviews are all over the boats. Love or hate. So... No real solid data on that one.

My Corvalus fishes just fine, similar to my Abu 6500 and 5600. The Corvalus is smooth and drag is good. I could care less if its metal or plastic, what matters to me is reliability and functionality. I am pleased with all it. No issues.

I have the Cardiff & the Corvallus the Cardiff is the Best by far. It's smooth, great drag system, and holds a Lot of Line. The Corvallis on the other hand has a decent drag, also holds alot of line (More than the Cardiff),it's also smooth, but the button gets in the way.and they are built Cheaper. The button on my Corvallis has broke once but I fixed it myself. And since then it hasn't gave me any hassle.
I would recomend a Shimano OVER a Abu ANY Day! Iv ben through 7 abus
BCX,C3,C4,Trophy,and Magnum the only 1 id get is the magnum the rest of them are Garbage. The internals of the Abu Garcias are pretty much All plastic, except for the Higher End 1s.They even have More than they should.Shimano for Life I will Never go back to Abu.

And for anyone who wants to Bash my Post go right ahead on it.
I have fishing experience I use All of my Gear to it's Full potential.
I have caught Thousands of Fish,& I have ben fishing for 23yrs.
