Squid for salmon?
So I went out and bought a pack of squid for sturgeon, however, I do not think it is going to be open another weekend. Has anyone ever used squid behind a dodger for springers (lower Willamette)? Seems like if they will hit a herring, they may fall for a squid. Just curious and thought I'd ask before I throw them out.......

Re: Squid for salmon?
I know you can catch salmon mooching whole squid in the ocean, not sure about in the river though. You could always save it for crab or rockfish bait, no reason to waste it.

Re: Squid for salmon?
Funny thing, I gave it a try years and years ago while fishing for springers and hooked into a nice sturgeon. Who would of known...my first ever sturgeon by the way!

I've heard the same from some credible fishermen.... have tried it only briefly but it is worth giving a try. They caught more than one big fall chinook. C.W.

Re: Squid for salmon?
I know they eat squid so last year I tried it for a couple of passes. No love, but then again, I have trolled days with herring and never had a hit either. Ya never know what the next killer bait might be for salmon.

Squid tentacles with a spin-a-glo work well on the hook or trolled.

I read a story I think B M wrote about a fisherman in Sellwood caught on on a orange peel. Squid may work.

Squid spinners, use the head and tentacles as you would a prawn.

I use some of the egg juice in my pickled squid brine and it seems to work great!

Yeah, I was stationed in Utah for almost three years before overseas. I now call it the Willamette special.
Came home to the springer thing and found out it triggers spring salmon here as well on a slow troll.

The thing I like is a slow roll on the bait. I'm trolling downhill, with and across the current.
I believe the cape strip inside spin of the herring ads more scent to the presentation.

One of the biggest steelhead I ever saw caught was hooked in the willamette on a squid wrapped K15 Kwikfish.

Re: Squid for salmon?
Down in the jaws, we've landed Tillamook springers that were actively feeding on squid..... that's a hint you can use.
