Default Hollow core pencil lead

When I clip off a piece of lead the end is pinched down and the hole in the center of the lead is closed.

Does anyone have a technique or trick they use to open up the hole. I did it with a fish hook but two problems with that - someday I will slip and bury the hook in a finger and it dulls the point of the hook.

Thanks all.

before you cut it take some pliers and score the piece of lead at the length you want. After that just bend that piece back and forth tell it snaps off. The hole should still be there if done right. Hope this helps.

The trick is to use the cutting edges of your pliers just enough to score the lead, you DO NOT want to cut it. Once you have the lead scored from the cutting edge, grip the lead with the tip of the pliers and bend it back and forth along the score mark until it breaks off of the spool. When it breaks off, the hollow core should be intact.

Good luck

You put the lead in the wire cutter portion of your pliers. Close them lightly and score a shallow groove all the way around the lead. Then wiggle the lead with your fingers and break it off from the roll. Insert tag end of line. Cast, fish on.

Dog toe nail clippers, just clip. Cuts right through never crimps the hole closed. they look like this.

Another vote for dog nail clippers, works slick as can be. Even have a pair hanging on my work bench to dress up old lead I find. Nothing works better.

cut it like you do with pipe, you dont need fancy pliers. takes a few seconds but it comes out perfectly clean. basically roll the lead through the cutters slightly adding pressure everytime you roll it. a few seconds longer cutting beats a minute or two picking a new hold.

Yeah, like everyone has said, I just score it and then bend it back and forth untill it breaks. I always rub the ends on my jeans or vest to smooth out any rough spots that might damage my line. I might consider getting a pair of those pliers, though. They would be very handy. They would be great for cutting the tips off of lead that has already been crimped so it could be used again wiithout losing too much lead. I always just save the crimped lead that i have removed for bobber fishing. (I crimp hollow core to a tag on my leader for drifting, but use rubber tubing for bobber fishing.)

Take a knife and ring the lead then just snap off. Hole will be open.

I don't use anything but by hands. That stuff is so soft I just bend it back and forth a few times and it breaks off just fine.

the price isn't the point. why carry ANOTHER piece of gear, when your pliers work just fine? if your in a boat, it doesn't matter, but when your hoofing it sometimes miles a day, the extra weight adds up. it's also something else to forget at home or loose on the bank.

Just bend it back and forth till it breaks. The hole wont get smashed shut.

Get a small hacksaw and some rope and tie it off around Your left arm with a figure 8 pattern to Your other shoulder with a quick release system and then also attach a carrier for extra blades,You wont need all the corkies and stuff.
