Angry FLIES - Driving me nuts!

Okay, so I was already a little nuts, but this puzzle is really getting to me and, in turn, I'm driving poor Andy a little nuts...

Flies in the house. Almost all of our south facing windows have flies on them during the day. Inside. the master bedroom is the worst.

WHERE ARE THEY COMING FROM? There are no open doors or windows through which they are entering. I'm not seeing any flies outside. It's too cold.

I get rid of the flies and more take their place. Ordinary house flies.

So this is bugging me (pun intended) for a few reasons:
1) if they're not coming from outside, they must be coming from inside which kind of creeps me out since I can't find the source.
2) if they are coming from outside, then that means cold air is getting in, too.
3) They are ANNOYING! Bouncing and buzzing against the glass endlessly

Now, here's part 2 of the puzzle... now we have lady bugs, too. Lady bugs! Not kidding. I vacuumed up a dozen flies along with one single lady. 30 minutes later, 1/2 dozen flies appeared along with FOUR lady bugs.

Does anyone else find this incredibly strange? It would kind of point to the bugs getting in from the outside, wouldn't it? But HOW? And why ladybugs? In February!?

Pretty weird that's for sure. Don't most horror movies start with things like this? Could they be coming from the attic or crawl space?

Do you have any inside animals? Dogs or cats or ? If you do have any animals, where do you feed them at? Also look at how and where your garbage/compost is. Can't think of any other ideas unless something has gotten in a crawl space or? and died. Sounds like a royal pain. Hope you get it figured out

no attic, but definitely crawl space - that's the part that creeps me out - what's down there breeding flies? Ick!

I could see flies coming from a crawl space, but lady bugs? What are they doing down there?

No food sources or animals. No flies in the kitchen to speak of, just every once in a while, I'll find a dead one on the floor in there.

we do have a compost bin at the end of the house where the master is, but it's just full of old plants/potting soil from the former owners. Compost that we add directly to the garden is fully buried in soil. even so, it's outside and the flies are in.

Oh, and thanks for the tip about horror shows - actually, when they first started showing up (about a week or two after we moved in), the thought did cross my mind

I probably wouldn't get too concerned until the spiders start showing up.

Have you poked your head in the crawl space, maybe shine a light down there and have a look? Check the vents around the house too. I once had a loose one and I did have rats living underneath...it was not good, although I did not have any insects because of them.

They are hatching from larvae from somewhere. Did the prior owners not take any pets with them?

Did you happen to bring any new plants into the house?
A few years ago this same thing happened in our house, and I finally figured out that they were coming from a bag of daffodil bulbs I'd bought and left on a shelf.
Moved the bulbs outside and problem solved.

Get one of these, they're fun! I want some flies to use these on but don't have any flies currently, usually only in the summertime.

Lived in an apartment once that had some Starlings die in an eve nest. They showed up on the inside window of my unit. Lots of cracks in any house that critters can move thru.

I hate spiders worse than flies, but if a couple of spiders could solve this problem, they'd be hired!

I haven't personally poked my head in the crawlspace, but the satellite guy said all was clear (and he was in the specific problem areas installing the cable). Apparently they look for ooey gooey surprises because of the prospect of accidentally encountering them with a hand or other body part.

Anyway, no new plants. The previous owners took their pets with them. Ours is dead, but accounted for and properly buried.

Stickfish, I know they are hatching from larvae from somewhere, hence the being creeped out part... This is just the wrong time of year for that!! And again, the Lady Bugs... really? What's up with that?

as for the bug zapper fly swatter thingies, yeah, those would be fun, but these flies are so lethargic that they have a hard enough time bouncing against the window. They're not flying free throughout the house.

And as luck would have it, we sent our "fly rod" off with the camper when we sold it

Keep those cards and letters coming folks! I know someone out there in ifish-land can solve this one!

We get flys like that too. It is my humble opinion (no evidence whatsoever) that they come in throught the recessed lights.

no recessed lights, we have vaulted, tongue-in-groove ceilings.

Andy says I should stop killing the flies because more just keep showing up for the funerals...

Wow, super helpful. Now I have a place to start. I'll check the caulking around the outside of the windows tomorrow - this is likely the culprit. who would have thunk that the lady bugs would actually be the clue to solve this mystery.

I don't want to destroy the ladies, they're super helpful. It's the flies. So find out the source of the lady bug's entry, and we likely solve the mystery of the flies as well!

Yay!

I put screen patches on them and no more flys

It's actually just the beginning. These insects are going to morph into your worst nightmare. They are just the tip of the iceberg. Living in the recesses of your walls are a mutant race of aliens that will manifest themselves at the appointed time. They will take you away to be their queen in another galaxy far far away. I suppose you should talk to Andy about this before it happens.

You got a dead or a rotten something somewhere. The fact there is alot of them and they are lethargic means they very recently hatched out of the cacoons.

Thanks Slick, I think maybe I could stand being a queen... Andy treats me like a princess, but that doesn't get me out of doing heavy lifting along side of him... if I were queen, gosh, I wouldn't even have to skipper the boat, much less haul firewood, clean house, WORK, etc, etc, etc!

Andy - watch out... I'm might soon be insect alien queen!!!

Up in Alaska it would be dead of winter 25 degrees below zero with 3 ft of snow on the ground and all of a sudden we'd find freshly hatched blue bottle flies (blue bombers) in the house. I never found where they were coming from and it only happened a couple of times over the years but there they were. In talking to friends some of them had the same thing going on.

Supposedly flies cannot live in temps much below 40 degrees and their eggs hatch in a short period of time so how do they survive the winter?

Here's an article for you to read

You know, it could be a sign of the Apocalypse! Seems to me Nostradamus had a quatrain that specifically mentioned the sudden and unexplained appearance of insects, he specifically describes them as "flies and spotted beetles" that signal the arrival of the end of times. Your house could be the nexus of the impending Armageddon. I'd call an exterminator and if that doesn't work schedule a seance.

Dead mouse/animal in heater ducting is an option. Sorry. Yuk.

Any warm area with an egress inside is suspect.

I've been seeing infantile flies clustering in the rafters near a light source in various barns where i work, last couple weeks or so. In the past it usually seems to have been due to mild winter temps and a "false spring"
I'm pretty sure it happened in early 96 - El Nino - when it warmed up and rained steady and hard

some of the larvae will work they way into siding, when the sun starts to warm it up they work their way through cracks and crevices inside of the inner walls of your house. fallowing the warmth they end up inside, often or not.

more often then not the larvae will crawl around turn into the pupa then when it warms up hatch and buzz around. used to happen yearly at my grandparents house. a little caulking and some insecticides rid them of their problems

Just a little warning if you end up buying another racket ball bug zapper thingy. It's best to forget about that one fly that's sitting on the wet kitchen sink handle.

Tis the season---we have them also. We have been in our place 8 years and it happens evey year, some more than others. Consider yourself lucky, we have waaaay more than you are talking about. I can vaccum up 15-20 lady bugs and 5-10 flies and come back and do it again every 30 minutes. You don 't have anything dead in the ducts or anywhere else. From what I have learned, both lay eggs in the mesh screens in the bird blocks under the eves. They start hatching n warm days and 1/2 end up inside and 1/2 outside. They then come from the crawl space into the house via the can lights in the ceiling and along the trim boards. We have a vaulted ceiling with tounge and groove ceiling boards. Sorry no answer for you but if you figure out a way to stop it please let me know. I just keep the shop-vac handy with extra hoses so I can reach them, and vaccum often. Even if you don't get them they seem to wind up dead in the window sills where they are easy to suck up.

Tell Andy to shower more often

You might have something dead under your house or in your duct work, have someone look. We had a skunk die under the house a few years ago and the flys were comming out of the walls!!!!

Try to leave the ladybugs unharmed, they are good vermin. So are wasps and hornets, they kill and eat flys.

We get hibernating flies in the rafters and when the sun warms the garage up there are swarms.

Take a spray bottle full of rubbing alcohol and spray them in the windows. It will kill the flies without leaving a gut smear on the windows and the alcohol dries clean and clear. If you have good aim you can knock "em out of the air as they fly by I keep a full bottle handy under the sink.

We had an occasional problem with flies, but then I discovered that a lack of bird cage maintenance was causing them to proliferate. As a matter of fact, I gotta clean the cage today. Thanks for the reminder.

I found that the best way to knock 'em out is those cheap fly paper strips you get at the hardware store. Flies go right after them and die accordingly. They look a little tacky (no pun intended) hanging up in the house, but they're better than flies buzzing around.

In the meantime, try not to fly off the handle.

WOW that fly art is fantastic!! Seriously, this could lead to a one man show of your fly art. Did you do that or is that from a fly site??

Lady bugs - they are here in our house, as they are this time of year every year, by the 1,000s - seriously. Don't sweat the lady bugs.

My surprise at your fly problem is that it is so EARLY! There should not be a fly issue at this time. Anyway, there are genetically altered male flies that you can buy (like a few thousand for $15.00 or so) that will breed with the flies you have and the resulting offspring will all be sterile. In about a month the fly population will be basically eliminated.

Came home this afternoon with the sun shining on the west side windows and sucked up 39 ladybugs and only 2 flies.

Thanks all for the input. I think the link for the ladybugs was most helpful. This pointed me to the likelihood that the flies were not coming from some dead thing in the wall or crawl space (we have no attic, no duct work). I took a walk-around the outside yesterday and came to the conclusion that they indeed are likely coming through the window drains. we will come up with some sort of screening system for those.

In addition, the siding is breeched in a few places (knew we would have to deal with that this spring, prior to painting). So this gives me a little peace of mind that:

a) it's not something dead and rotting that's breeding a fly hatch
b) it's not a sign of the end of the world
c) I don't have to worry about becoming some alien insect queen

I am, however, obsessed with finding the time to try my hand at fly-art!

Oh, and I do have to mention that Andy was right (yes, dear, mark it on your calendar - I said it publicly! ) In sucking up the bugs, it was only attracting more bugs (at least where the ladies are concerned). Although, it wasn't due to impending "funerals" - but rather pheromones.
