Default Sumpter deer hunting

Heading over to the sumpter unit with my son for his first year at deer camp as a hunter. We scouted it this summer a little and I found that I liked the country just south west of sumpter best. Are any ifishers familiar with that area and did we make a good choice? I have never hunted the unit and it being my sons first year i want to make sure i give him a good shot at a buck. any pointers on the unit would be great!

Just be sure you are hunting public land. There are a lot private grounds in that area of the Unit. The bucks seem to be off to themselves and up real high.-WW

I have hunted up around Dooley mountain, saw lots of cattle, the only deer we seen were on the left side of the road coming down from Sumpter. Beautiful country up there.

I will be up there too...though northeast of SUmpter. Bucks are scattered widely, if you get on the skyline road that runs from the hwy heading to johnday, and it goes all the way to the next highway and continues, it covers some great contry south of Phillips Reservoir. Try some of the old fire scars, and down into hereford and unity. Definately lots of possiblities. Best of luck to you and your son!
