I was there as was Chester from this board. The weight of the fish was only 9.485 lbs. Not a bad fish (in fact a once in a lifetime fish) but not a world record. The fellow was from Pendleton. The ODFW biologist on site verified that it was a US record but not a world record. If it was to be a world record, it would have to be over 9.6 lbs.

So close... I think it will be just a matter of days or weeks before the new world record kokanee will be caught in Wallowa Lake. I wish I was there giving it another shot!

To be quite honest it was luck. I caught some real nice fish and so did Chester. Bob Schmidt from Mack's Lures caught one just shy of six pounds. Last night I had one spool me, something a steelhead does, not a Kokanee. There is a world record in there and it will probably be broken several times this year. Chester lost one yesterday that took one hook with him and left him an eye on the other hook. There is one big *ssed teed off fish still swimming around!

Wow, thats a big fish. It was nice meeting you there, Cannon. My largest was only 19 inches, but I was pretty happy with it as it was by far my biggest koke.

Nice meeting you there as well. Now I can't wait to go back. Those fish had shoulders on them and they were fat. Not like a normal spring fish.

The Silver rush has begun

Whats funny is right after i came in after catching a 21" and a 22 1/2' A guy was at the dock complaining how disappointed he was with the fish. He supposedly had got a 23" and a 24" that evening and he complained about how theres a lack of feed in the lake and the fish were so skinny and that they didnt fight at all.

No kidding, when I was there the week before last, the bigger kokes all pulled off of the downrigger release clips; made big runs, and fought harder than any kokanee I've ever caught before.

The fellow from Pendleton that caught the record kokanee was Ron Campbell, retired City of Pendleton Fireman.

I was fishing with Ron's brother Larry, whom also had a previous state record from Wallowa Lake, Sunday morning as Ron caught his.

He pulled up alongside of us so I could take a video of the big fish, and borrowed our scales to compare weight with his, then it was off to get a certified weight.

Ron has fished the lake about every weekend since Memorial
Day, consistantly catching large Kokanee.

My heartiest congratulations to a long time hunting, fishing partner and
good friend!

I know, all i could do was roll my eyes at him! I had never caught a 20"+ koke before but it fought every bit as much or more than id ever expected. And when the fillets look like a cohos fillet, id say there eating good enough!

So since you have a video you must have a picture of this monster? Can you post it? About that was one fun battle.

Gotta love it when the Oregon Live reporter says that "Ron snagged this monster". You know some folks are going to take that literally. That is a heck of a fish, I really think that I may need to get up there, but it looks like I should take steelhead tackle not my little kokanee tackle.

I was thinking the same thing. Ought to post that up on the main board, he would probably be arrested by now.

That is one beautiful fish!

At the lake, the official weight given was as I stated earlier 9.485 pounds which converts to 9 pounds, 7.760001 ounces. I seriously doubt that the fish gained any weight after that unless he got a lead enema....

You might want to re read the article. The guy that caught the fish was Ron
Campbell from Pendleton. The reporter also got the weight wrong. The official weight was 9.485 pounds.

In order to beat the current world record the fish needs to be 2 ounces more than the current holder to be considered a new record. If not, it is considered a tie.
