WE need to reduce the predators, They eat all year long.

Cats and bears shoot all year long (with a tag).

Lets not fool our selfs hunters # increase if you truly want to get back to 30 years ago. you get one elk tag every ten-twenty years. and no optics.

Sorry, but to me you're admitting to seeing/knowing about illegal activity, and you did NOTHING to report it?

And YOU are wondering what the heck is wrong in this state? Sorry but that is pathetic.

Hey maybe the guy drew 3 years in a row? Maybe he was part of the big science project? Maybe he was in there to see where the elk were so he could shoot from a helicopter. I will regulate me, and you regulate anyone you want john wayne.

I call BS. In one of your previous posts, you said the he went in there 3 years in a row and nobody checks. That right there implies you knew he was in the wrong.

Look man as far as I am concerned it is a high fenced hunt, I do not give a rip on what happens inside that fence. I believe all of those studies, data and money are a complete waste and totally laughable. There was a guy who just posted that he reported bears and lions and there and the biologist went "really"? You could drive in before light and drive out after and know one would be the wiser. It is more govt waste that has no bearing on what is going on..If it did we would be going in the opposite direction with our populations after so many years of these VITAL studies. How long has that thing been there? 10 years well thats plenty of time to have made policy changes and corrections to help deer and elk. WAKE UP

The Starkey Project is one of the most comprehensive field research projects ever attempted. Studies examine key questions about elk, timber, cattle, deer, recreation uses and nutrient flows on National Forests.

I have no intentions of hunting this area, so call it whatever you want. But for those involved in the topic and conversation, why don't you find another thread to "contribute" to if you are so against what's being discussed here.

Umm... I'm guessing that you haven't stayed around Tower Mt. during a wind and snow storm when the lodge poles are flying. It's all fun and games until trees start dropping through camp.

Wow, there is so much mis-information in this thread I am pretty sure I just got a little dumber reading it.

For those of you who are not big fans of the experimental forest I respect your opinion. I only wish you would at least read some of the literature posted and/or take a tour of the site with a bio. One of the largest donars to the project is RMEF and if you don't believe with their goals and philosophies well then we know where you stand. ODFW is only a partner is the experimental forest, not the sole entity. While I am not a big fan of what the government does most of the time, alot of these posts are just anti-gov type rants and rumors.

I tend to hunt a different unit every year due to the points system and the biggest trend I see with hunters is the ever decreasing distance one travels from their vehicle. This will, and rightly should, decrease your opportunity to encounter the reclusive elk. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad people are staying close to their rigs, I think it has helped me be successful in all of but one year in my 25 years of public land hunting. You should only get offended by this statement if you are one of those I am speaking of.

The biggest problem with threads like this is the ability of anyone with a computer to post "facts" and "my buddy told me" type statements without really knowing much about the subject.

Again, I encourage anyone with negative feelings or just plain curiosity about the project to take a tour of the site. If anything, it will give you the opportunity to post and contribute to threads while being a little more informed on the subject.

Getting back to the original topic matter.........We just got back from our second season hunt in Starkey which is adjacent to Ukiah. Heard very few shots and we did not see any animals hanging in any of the camps we drove by. From reports we heard it sounds like first season was also slow.

We did see some cows on opening day and the last day we hunted. Heard some other animals busting through the woods that we did not see. That at least added to the excitement level.

I will say this. We drove back on Wednesday and for the first time ever, we did not see any evidence of animals taken in any of the hunting rigs heading home.

Even though no animals were taken in our party we still had a great time and we will definitely be back next year.

No and no. Just the average gun owner, hunter, atv owner, 4x4 only (no hybrids here), snowmobiler, and anything outdoors enthusiast!

I signed my name to the post, so anyone familiar with the forest will know my association.

Not looking to fuel any arguments, just looking to keep things somewhat straight. Now let's all hug

Nope not hard at all, that's not the point. I don't where you normally hunt but I've never been anywhere that when the wind is howling it's considered "perfect conditions" as you put it.

My point was that a lot of camps probably DID in fact move and that may have been why it seemed like such a ghost town.

A lot of camps arent prepared for BAD weather, and ive been hunting a couple miles from the tower when a snow storm hit and a LOT of people couldnt get out and had to wait a couple days. I had chains on all 4 and it was a little crazy on the way down...l.I saw a lot of camps leave

Nope. We were there 5 days before the season started and what we saw was what showed up. Even when the roads were nothing but big boulders and chuckholes that kept top speed to 15 miles an hour there were more people in the woods. I guees the Wolves and Cougers can have it. By the way a Couger passed within 20 yards behind our tent in broad daylight one afternoon, people in camp ,kids playing dogs barking, sure they are afraid----not.

We are on the other side of the canyon behind the ranch, lots of snow and wind with a couple of nights into the low teens to single No.s but the roads were open from the traffic passing through road hunting from La Grand motels.
