I would like to see more closure days during the season window. Specifically, I'd like to see the fishing shut down on any day I was going to get skunked.

I like a lot of the ideas already posted. Here's a few more;

* Mandate single barbless hooks (including lures and non bait presentations) irregardless of where you fish especially if release of a certain species or size is mandatory.

* Allow up to (a multiple of)3 hooks on the same line.

* Reduce the number of (salmon) keepers for a year and no buying another punch card once the one you have is filled. Reported lost cards excluded with strong consequences for "intentionally or irresponsibly" lost cards.

* Regulate guide fishermen to fish where they live. Not outside a 30 (road) mile radius of where they live.

* Mandate commercial safety inspections, instruction and licensing for ALL boats carrying passengers for hire.

* Mandate that gillnetters fish only in tributaries or in adjacent bays when returns are predicted as sustainable. No fishing in the mainstream where the chance of illegal or bi-catch is high.

* Do not allow fishing on a tributary when fishing for the same species is off limits in the main stream

* Do not allow swayed fishing regulations/mandates based on "big city" or "influential dollars" from individuals or special groups with the intent to provide special fishing rights and/or privileges on tax payers fishing areas.

*No more fishing (specifically) for oversize sturgeon.

* Tighter regulations (including increasing the number killed) on increased sea lion/seal populations.

* Leave fish ladders open on rivers with dams. Make "absolutely no fishing zones" at least 1 mile below mainstream river dams.

* Equal numbers of fish for all groups; commercial, sport and tribal (per taxed capita). (Commercial meaning charters, guides, netters and all those who fish for a living or for profit.) Any and all regulation changes to be voted on in conjunction with other State or County standard voting processes.

* Real numbers posted on return predictions verses the actual number of return (obtained by unbiased machines or count process).

Harvest quotas based on "real numbers" counted at Bonneville rather than "anticipated numbers" that never come to fruition.

All public and private land owners must give an easement to pass through their property to fishermen along all Oregon lakes, streams, and rivers during fishing season, and in return fishermen must offer to give half of their keep to the owner(s) on whose land the fish was caught.

Any fisherman leaving trash of any kind on private land to be fined $1000.00 and loses the their tags for 1 year per item of trash.

On that note; next time there is a Compact meeting more then 30 miles away, I guess all us guide should stay home as well

So since the sports buy and consume more expendables then the commercials - as in your own words (per taxed capita). that pretty much leaves the commercials with a BIG FAT 0 in the terms of allocation.
I like your thinking

1. Coho, keep first two regardless of clip.

2. Ban all C&R only fishing for salmon/steelhead. If there's not enough to have a kill-take fishery, we have no business fishing on them, period.

3. Expand the sturgeon spawner zone down to Horn Pt. No fishing for sturgeon from May 15-July 31.

4. Remove the bag limit for shad, and encourage significant kill-harvest.

5. Remove gillnets on the CR, and relegate them to safe zones.

Ya, sorry about that. I thought about that right after I posted. That wouldn't be the worst of Ideas though. They can really pack through that section of river. I used to love it when they would drift right through the whole I would be fishing, pulling plugs or diver and bait the whole way through.

I'd like to add that in no way do some of the suggestions presented in this thread represent the opinion of more than one person, nor of that individual's giving more than 3 seconds of thought prior to submitting.

If there are not enough wild fish to support a catch and release fishery hatcheries on that system must be closed as hatcheries add increased fishing pressure and thereby increase bycatch of the species in danger

Since most biologists know around when the runs are and around what time the majority of fish start to turn dark on the smaller streams.... close them at that time. Picking through a bunch of boots to find a bright fish would, "I think" put a lot of stress on those fish that are close to spawning and short on energy.

Now the follow up...

If you all went to a fishery stakeholder meeting and had it described to you in detail why this would mean a couple weeks worth of fishing time vesus a few months worth of fishing time...

Would you still support it?

The administrative agency of the ESA doesn't care how the kill allocations it grants are used by fisheries.

Fish can be harvested in fisheries that have appropriate ESA authorization, including, but not limited to, mark selective fisheries. ESA Final Listing Determination for West Coast Salmon. Federal Register, June 28, 2005.

The prohibitions do not mandate that hatchery fish be ad-clipped, nor do they mandate the use of mark selective fisheries. ESA Final Listing Determination for West Coast Salmon. Federal Register, June 28, 2005.

No limits of any kind on illegally introduced species such as bass, that continue to ruin the lakes of Central Oregon

A few more:

1. Allow the ODFW biologists the final say on whether a stream should be open for wild fish retention.

2. Remove all limits on all non-native species.

3. Require mandatory catch reporting 1x per month via phone or internet.

1. Liberalize muzzle loader equipment to at least match Washington Laws.
2. Allow dogs for hunting cougar.
3. Allow the new two rod rule for salmon & steelhead on the rivers.
4. One fish limit on the Willamette & Columbia where you must keep the first fish caught whether it is clipped or not clipped.

How about not front loading a run with the nets. For that fact, how about letting some fish get through the dam before any fishing in the lower main-stem.

For them to re-open the salmon season here in California. Allow only hatchery fish to be kept and all wild fish released. The hatchery's to start clipping the adipose fin on hatchery salmon. An increase on the limit of hatchery steelhead. Dale (SalmonBuster)

Create a Sturgeon spawning sanctuary on the Willamette during the Spring from the I205 bridge up to the falls. There is far too much oversize abuse occuring in that area at that time.
