I went there 10 years ago for my honeymoon, brought my 7wt just in case i had time to use it, and thankfully I did. had some fun snook fishing in the river tribs in tarmarindo and costa verde area (all west coast) don't wade the rivers too deep and watch out for crocs ... I also rented a 2 person open kayak and trolled big streamers... caught some mackerel and needlefish and jacks, hooked a few fish that I never saw that nearly spooled me before the line cut/broke. :-) figured they could have been anything (tuna, eldordo, wahoo) they have epic saltwater fly fishing there, esp out of Quepos. in fact, if you have the $ and the gear (12wt rod/reel), i'd go out for sailfish on the fly, I've heard it's amazing and multiple fish days are common, could be the experience of a lifetime.
We never even made it to the east coast where you can catch HUGE tarpon on the fly. Costa Rica is awesome, have fun. I'm jealous. |

Well if the fishing is terrible, you will be in some of the best surfing area in the world! I lived there for a year and spent a lot of time further north near Playa Naranja studying with a biologist named Dan Jantsen. ANyway, I hooked some small roosters in Papagayo (before it became a resort area). Roosters were chasing small 6 inch mackerel right up onto the beach! Also had some luck down near Junquillal (sp?). Good luck and report when you get back!

well, its cost rica, might as well fish. i would think like a clouser, crazy charlie or a regular charlie, christmas charlie, any type of popper and baitfish immitations i would think would get you into some fish. you should probably make your own leader. i would go from fly line to 50# mono, to 30# mono and finally to either a 20 or 15# mono and fly. just depends how big of fish your going to catch. but i would try to start off with smoething similar to that as most saltwater fish arent line shy. and it is also saltwater so the range of fish can vary widely and the coral and such can really damage line allot faster than a regular rock
