Default Gary Hilton... Last cast :(

Gary Hilton lost his battle with cancer and passed Sunday morning. He will be greatly missed by so many.

We love you, Gary. You have touched so many lives.

Mark, a friend, writes:

Quote:
Gary passed away in his sleep last night. He's scouting out new
places to fish so he'll be able to guide me when I join him.
Sorry about the delay in posting this info, but we needed to wait for approval from the family, which came this morning.

Jen

I'll never forget how wonderful it felt, in the midst of being a stranger in a strange land in Alaska, to go to catch a flight to a remote fishing place with Chris Sessions and be greeted by Gary Hilton, there where we caught the flight! Surprise!

He was just everywhere there was fishing!

Ah, the memories.

Now, I have some phone calls to make to friends that I have thought about in the recent weeks.
DON'T WAIT!

Bill was going to call Gary just last week. We were talking about him. You know? That "Oh! I should call Gary..." And then you get too busy? Uh huh.

Don't get too busy. We all have those phone calls to make. Don't regret not making them. You'll be SO glad you did!

If anyone has some good pictures of Gary, I would LOVE it if you would share them. This is the only one I have. I took this at the Rendevouz, I think.

That's Gary in the gray sweatshirt, strolling down the stairs thinking to himself, "Oh! Another award... Yet another award!"

Always enjoyed talking fishing with Gary at the Guide Shop, he was a constant figure on the Wilson.
Say hi to my Dad, he's fishing that same tailout.

I'm heartbroken by the news. Gary was one of the truly good guys in this business and he was a guide's guide. I first met Gary in the late 70's on the Mollala River. He was waiting for his trip to show up as me and a buddy readied to launch our drift boat. In the span of about 10 minutes we watched Gary catch two steelhead while he waited for his guests...I asked my buddy who he was and he said, "That's Gary Hilton...he's one of the best guides in the area." That was 30 years ago!

I had the pleasure of fishing with Gary on the Lewis for silvers, the Clackamas for steelhead and down on the coast. When I was a young guide he treated me as an equal and over the years I came to admire him as one of the living legends in our sport.

Gary was an under-the-radar guide who stayed out of the spotlight but he was a giant among those that knew him and fished with him.

He will be missed and I will always be grateful to him for the lessons he shared with me and the time we spent on the water.

Rest in peace Gary.

I never met Gary but it sound like he was a great guy and a great guide. People like that make this sport, and this world, a great place. His contributions will not be forgotten I'm sure. Peace be with him and his family, they will be in our prayers.

First the Guide Shop burns down and now we have lost Gary truly the end of an era. Gary was always friendly, and willing to share some tips. During fall Chinook season you had to get up really early to beat Gary to the Wall on the Wilson still find myself looking for him when we round the corner.

RIP Gary

Sad day. Knew him for years and as Trey said, "He was a guides guide"

Nice guy, great fisherman, quiet unassuming fish catching nice Guide.

Next time I'm over at his favorite hole on the ditch, I'll grab a couple of clusters of eggs and toss them in the water. Wont be able to see his line or bobber from where he now has his boat anchored, but bet he gets bit.

RIP Gary, The world is a better place because you were in it.

Here is a pic from Alaska from many years ago. This was at the end of a great day fishing for Silvers on a fly-in trip with AWA. Gary was one of the best fishermen and human beings I've ever had the pleasure of being around. RIP

I remember Gary coming to baseball games in Kenai, Alaska when Jim Hardesty and I were umpiring 20 years ago. We would then go out for a barley pop afterwards. This friendship continued, and there was not a time that I did not stop at the Guide Shop to talk to him. He was always helpful and respectful. It did not matter if you were a rookie or a veteran fisherman. A class act, good friend, and a great mentor to the sport. He will be missed.

For all my 30 years of fishing in Tillamook Gary Hilton was a legend. His fishing boats always had a special place in my vision. I remember Rusty and I helping clean Gary's boat at the end of a fall season. IT WAS SPECIAL. I hated to be behind Gary on the Wilson as he and his crew would get most of the bitters before I could get there.
Now St Peter has a buddy to fish with and show him some new tricks.
The end of an ERA for sure. We will miss you buddy.

I fished with a close friend of Mr. Hilton's on Sunday. He took a call that morning, and looked a little different after he hung up. Apparently, it was one of Gary's family calling to say that he had passed.

I never met him myself, but I could tell by the way that call affected Rusty, that Gary must have been a special friend and a great guy.

RIP Gary, you'll be missed by many................and that is the true measure of a man.

That picture of yours rattled me just now Jennie because your post brought to my mind a great friend, Ray Hinea, and then your picture of Gary has Ray in it. He's the one at the bottom of the stairs. Ray was known as Doc Spratley here on ifish. It is really crappy to lose a great friend.

Gary was the best fisherman I have ever known. He helped me become the fisherman i am today. He told me ten years ago when i forgot my oars you can borrow mine, all you need to do is anchore and put out k-16's and the fish will come to you. Things have changed since then but he always caught fish in front or behind of anyone who put in. He is the man and will always be the best in all ifishers hearts. GOD BLESS GARY

I had the pleasure of fishing around Gary for some 30 years. Over time we became good friends and had many laughs in the basement. Those coffee cans full of cigarette butts told the story. The smile he had is all that needs to be said, he will be missed.

Tough news... we knew it was coming but still tough. Gary was a true free spirit whose life was fish, and he will be missed by all who knew him. I first met Gary over 20 years ago at the Guide Shop and would run into him almost every time I drifted the Trask. He was always willing to share information with a smile and a kind word. I fished with Gary in Alaska on helicopter trips across the inlet and we had the time of our lives! Over the years we traded bait secrets and fish stories and all of my memories of Gary put a smile on my face. I hope he is on to a better life.

I appreciate all the kind words that you've given Hilti'. I would like to share a few memories.
Gary spent his last 3 weeks with Deb and I up at our home on the Kalama River. His wish was to spend time doing what he loved most; Fishing and being in the mountains! Along with hospice, Gary was made comfortable and was allowed to carry out his wishes in his final days.
He got to watch his nephew, Joe, catch his 1st steelhead, watch football, tell stories and visit with friends that dropped by. He shared tips on catching fish, his receipe for his famous crab salad that he shared with family and friends around the holidays. He talked of the fond memories of Alaska, Mecca, Tillamook and deer hunting in Lukins Creek.
Gary and I go back some 35 years. I was invited to play summer league softball in Canby. I showed up with a limit of Springers. He opened the cooler
and exclaimed "where did you get those"? "You show me where and I'll take you blacktail hunting"! And our friendship began!!
Hilti was then a lifelong friend and companion. He became our best man at our wedding. My wife was surprised to see the both of us dressed in something besides waders, an old shirt and a fishing rod.
He was a masterful hunter and a skilled fishing guide. Many a days and nights were spent on the Trask, Wilson and Molalla Rivers. In between foos ball tournaments, we fished the Clack, Lewis and the Kalama. We floated the Deshutes in the spring and fly fished. He loved that so much, that each year he made his annual "vacation" to Mecca flats to fly fish and to be with friends and relax.
He would take marker pens and doll up plugs finding the right colors. He experimented with egg cures and finally developed his own which still stands as the best "GOO" on the river. In the fall, after returning from Alaska, he would set up shop at the Guide Shop. He would always clear out time to hunt with myself, Jimbo and his Dad. We never missed a year of hunting for an elusive blacktail deer.

I could go on and on....
We wanted to express our gratitude to ALL of Hilti's friends, clients and kindly people that graced our home and for those who called to let "Hilti" know that they cared deeply for him. Deb and I appreciate the new friendships that have evolved due to Gary's death and passing. I appreciate Tim and Linda Marshall, Ernie and Pat, Dan and Toy. You folks are stellar! You realized what a great friend Hilti was and lent kind words and generosity to us during this stressful time. You are special just as Hilti was!
Gary's death was a very special time in our lives. We celebrate the memory of a very unique and loving friend. His death brought great sorrow but also great relief knowing his suffering is over.
I am so blessed to be able to know his brother and family, Jim (aka Jimbo) and Becky. He is an avid blacktail hunter and my very close friend. We wish to express our thanks in giving us the opportunity to help Gary in his final days. It was a huge sacrifice to have him move away from home but ultimately something Gary really wanted. Deb and I were honored. It was a labor of love. A time of giving comfort
.

Lastly, Hilti lived life to the fullest. He loved what he chose to do. As I took him to his last treatment, he commented about all the people being out of work. He said that he wished he could, that everyone else couldn't make an excuse. That was the first time I have ever heard Hilti say "woulda, coulda, shoulda"! He was simple, fair and honest. He loved everyone and everyone couldn't help but love him.
Were all going to miss the Garemiester.
Tight lines, Hilti.
Love ya man!
Thanks for YOU being "The Best Man" in our lives!

Alti:
Thanks for sharing these memories of Gary. I knew Gary years ago, but sorta lost track of him in the last 10 years or so. He was a great man and always would share his great knowledge of fishing with many of us. I'm glad that you were there for him at the end.
God bless you....and thanks again for sharing. We will remember his family in our prayers.

I first meet Gary when i was 9 or 10 at Larry,s in O.C. i would walk up from the bowling alley drift to Larry.s to call my dad for a ride home and to talk fishing with Gary or who ever would talk to a little kid and Gary would allways give me the time of day he was a real nice guy. He would allways say high on the river when he floated by in the winter on the lower clack.I grew up a few blocks from his house on high st in O.C. and would stop by when ever i would see him outside. He always took the time to talk to the little kid so interested in fishing a true gentleman. He showed me a real nice 4x4 Blacktail in his house he had hung on the wall i,m sure was a Lukins cr buck. I remember walking under the trolley car bridge and seeing Gary and 3 nice big springer laying there and helping him haul those up to a little toyota or datsun pick up and him giving me a ride home.I have real good memories of Gary Hilton . I all so lost track of him over the last 10 years but will never forget him or driving down high st and seeing a drift boat hooked up to a white van or a green and white bronco 24/7 he was ready . Thank,s for taking the time to talk to the kid so interested in fishing. Blake Bartley

Blake,
Your memories/story is soooo cool! He was a guy that would talk gently and personally to anyone. He could really capture the moment and spark your imagination with his stories. Thanks so much for sharing.
Hopefully, I'll get to meet you on Dec. 5th.

I have been thinking for a couple of weeks of how I could express my thoughts of how much Gary was loved by me and my family.

Gary was a more than just a friend, he was a mentor, he was considered one of our family. My wife and I both cried when Mike called me and told me he had passed on.

I was fishing in Washington with several friends when Mike called, I had to walk away for several minutes to reflect on life, and think about Gary. Then I called my wife, it was tuff for both of us.

One of the greatest honors in my life will always be that I got to spend time together with Gary in his last hunting camp. It was great to be there with him, and he was there when my son took his first blacktail buck. My son got that buck on the same hill Gary got his last. I can't express what a honor it was for me and my son.

Gary will never be forgotten in this home. I have pictures on the wall of him and myself in Alaska and here in Oregon, they have alway's been special to me, now they just mean that nuch more to us.

Alti,

Debbie and I want to thank you and your wife for the love and caring that you gave Gary in his final day's. We were so impressed with the caring and love that both of you gave him those last day's. And thank you both for letting us come to your home to say goodbye to Gary.

In memory of Hilti.....

You were my mentor, my friend. Bless you buddy and rest in peace.

Deb and Rusty,
Your memories got me goin' again! Deb and I can't thank you enough for coming over and saying goodbye to Hilti. It was great seeing you both.

I could see by the many friends and especially family that dropped by or called that he was loved and will be missed.

Nice story on your son's 1st buck. That trip will always keep a warm place in my heart. Gary was proud and confident of what to expect and your son was just plain beside himself (not to mention his father ). Funny thing, we always wanted Gary to be proud of us!

It wasn't the first buck you or a family member got up there. Your first and last one, if I remember right, was one of those that: "I don't ever want to ever go back up there and hunt again!" Great memories!

Rusty, If you have a pic you could download, that would be great or bring it by the Memorial Drift on the 5th.
See ya there, buddy.

Yeah... and I'd love to see some more pictures, please.

Gary is on the front page of ifish on "casting memories" and I'll also put a copy of this on Last cast. I just didn't want to... yet.

Just thinking about Gary, today. The fishing world is absent some greats.
