Default Big Oregon Buck

I won't say names or places as I was not the shooter on this hunt. I was there however, and this buck is a true monster. 30.5" wide and super heavy. I am posting this 'cause I figure you guys are like me and would want to see this true trophy buck taken on public lands in Oregon.

http://www.ifish.net/gallery/uploads..._Buck_2009.jpg

Cheers.

A little on the small side for my liking. Other than that...not to shabby of a deer. They have to be at least 35" wide before I'll consider.

That is a true monster. I saw one in the silvies a long time ago during a late elk hunt that may had the width, but I sure don't think it was that heavy.

Someday?

unload the pictures onto a website such as photobuck (if you dont have an account just make one real quick, its free) one you loaded it on there you will see it there in you "album" when you pulled your cursor over tehe picture 4 different code will be displayed move your mouse down to the one labled "IMG code" copy right click and copy that code and paste it directly into the bow your going to write the story in, best of luck

I cant wait to see!

Thanks for putting those up off my gallery elkhuntr... I had time to get them on there but not to write the story about the hunt yet or figure it out for myself how to load them to the thread. I will write the whole story by the end of the weekend, but am short on time tonight. The pics are of the buck as we found him, one of me and my good friend (the guy who shot it) and one more of him with the buck. Story is coming soon.

I promised a story by the end of the weekend... here it is. Three days hunting and covering lots of ground on foot (10 plus miles a day) had not yielded a single deer sighting. This is typical for this area: not many deer in a vast amount of land, but if you see one it might be a good one. There were 3 of us hiking and glassing constantly behind two spotting scopes; it was countless hours of sage brush glassing and hiking to the next high spot after seeing nothing at the last one. The two guys I was with had tags, and I was along to help (I'm a bow hunter). I know the area well, so I took them to the spots I have seen good bucks over the years. Neither of the tag holders were showing discouragement by the late afternoon of day 3, but I think they were starting to wonder if I had led them astray after not seeing any hair in 30 miles of hiking and glassing.

That all changed in a hurry during the late afternoon of Monday, October 5th. Around 5:30 PM off the edge of a huge sage flat on a juniper and rimrock spotted hillside this beautiful old buck showed himself. The shot was taken while he fed with his head down; the bullet struck true and he fell without taking a single step (270 wsm). We approached cautiously, but he was down for good.

It was truly awesome to put my hands on this buck. He was very old (one of his 4 teeth will be aged by ODFW). His head was so massive, it stole my attention away from his trophy rack. He had the most distinct face and cape, with an old white battle scarred head and a bulging roman nose. His ears were sliced in various places, one with a 1/2 inch hole through the center of it. I don't have a good number on the live weight of this deer as he had to be cut up to pack him out, but if I had to guess, I would say ~250 pounds. He was as thick as any old buck I've ever seen through the neck and chest, and had 3/4 of an inch of fat covering his whole torso. Wrapping my hands around his main beams felt more like grabbing onto the bases of a mature bull than a muley buck. His mass is unreal, carrying all the way up. His front forks are somewhat shallow, but still very thick. We put the tape to him, and reveled in the good fortune of taking a public land buck over 30" in Oregon. After an extensive picture taking session, we used the rest of the fading light to carefully cape him out, cut him up, and strap him to our packs. When we finally returned to camp we hung the meat, stared at the horns and took a celebratory sip of fine whiskey.

More long days of hiking and glassing did not produce a buck for the second tag holder, but we were on cruise control after taking such an unforgettable animal earlier in the week. The buck will of course be honored with a full shoulder mount. Even though I didn't shoot it I will definitely remember that experience as one of the greatest hunts I have been a part of. The pictures I put in my gallery were posted previously by elkhuntr (thanks), I'll try to post pictures of the finished mount down the road when it comes back from the taxidermist.

Cheers,

KJ
