![]() On Sunday, September 27, Kyle Anderson of Rapid City, MI caught this 50-pound 8-ounce Great Lakes muskie. The fish is now the new Michigan state record. It beat the old record, set in 1984, by 2.5 pounds. Anderson was fishing in Torch Lake, near Traverse City. Photo by David Rose

That fish is probably older than the guy holding it. Most muskie anglers I've known practice C&R exclusivily, even with State record fish. Nice fish but it's dead.

Is it just me or does that first picture look shopped? The other pics on the Field & Stream website look real but that first one sure looks funny.
Apparently he says that he did attempt to revive and release the fish but it was hooked in the gills.

Another side of the coin ...... I have a friend that worked for the Wisconsin Department of Fish and Wildlife. They would do a lot of fish surveys and in the lakes with lots of big muskies the results were obvious. Fish numbers of all other species were down.... He joked, "Catch and release of all muskies is great, if you want lakes with one big fish in it."
It's alright to keep trophies.... they've shared their genes for many, many years already and there are plenty of their offspring ready to move into their slot. |

That fish may have never passed its genes. I heard it's pretty common for trophies/records to be sterile. I.e., no energy is allocated to reproduction, only growth.

Well this time it only took to the 6th post before someone said a big fish was photo shopped/fake. It it does end up in the record book then it was certified and then we will know if it was real. Do you see the strain on that guys arm? I dont think a mount would do that.

Its likely the camera had a vivid color setting, thus making it look shopped. Its not. And if your bicep was that large, it would be no problem lifting 50lbs!

![]() Mangled plug ![]() What a Tyranasaurus. These fish are huge. It's not that suprising. I'll try to find the old record from the Chippewa Flowage in Wisconson later. That thing is a toad and then some.

Awesome fish.
I've been beaten by some Northern Pike half that size and they were fun. |

What a couple of months for fresh water records. A new world record rainbow, then in barely more than a month, Michigan kicks out a new world record brown and state record muskie. I grew up fishing for these guys on summer trips to Minnesota. I dreamed about these guys when I was a kid, I still do.
Congrats.

He's holding it with both hands...and still straining...
Nice catch...I've always wanted to catch a Musk.... That Larry Dallenberg feller makes it look easy... Maybe someday.

AWESOME muskie!!!!
![]() They are really a rush to catch. Muskie, Northern Pike, and Walleye. Nothing like fishing with wire leaders so your line doesn't get cut from their teeth when they strike! ![]() A.A.

Just think if you were snorkeling in a lake and one of those came up to your face!
If you know muskies, they are bold enough to do just that.

NO, the photo does not look Photoshopped...stop by the link of the photo taken
by Eric Sharp, a staff photographer for the Detroit Free Press, one of the finest newspapers in the USA...his photo of the fish that ran in the newspaper looks *exactly* like the fish and the guy in the photo posted here...the fish looks odd because it is a freakishly large specimen, and muskies are very long, slender fish. In response to the poster above lamenting the fact that the fish was killed...yeah, it was. How many top predators does a lake need? That fish got that way probably at the expense of 5,000 perch, 10,000 alewives, 1,000 brown trout, 2,000 walleye, 1,500 smallmouth bass, and who knows how many other aquatic animals... |

There's plenty o muskies. And I Guarantee there are probably some bigger ones than that one in the lake. That one is a beauty. Great color!
btw, the method of photographing the fish is called cheating the lense. When you are at an angle or hold an object out in front or at a particular angle it will look bigger.
