I've guided customers to plenty of big fish on the Kenai and out of Seward, Alaska, but today's trophy is really special.
Trolling the mouth of the Chetco River today, one of my passengers, Carl Johnson, hooked into one of the Southern Oregon river's monster kings, which tipped the scales at 58 pounds three hours after it was bled and placed in the fish box in the bow of my jet boat. The salmon measured 49 1/2 inches and had a 35-inch girth. ![]() We were trolling Rogue Bait Rigs, which are spinner blades fished above a whole anchovy, along the jetties. We hooked three fish on three back-to-back-to-back passes, but this big boy was the only one that stuck long enough to get it into the net. We've been getting a fish or two almost every day, but this is my first hawg of the season and has me really excited about October and November.

58 lbs after bleeding and sitting in a fish box for three hours.
It would have been cool to see an honest 60 lbs on the scale. Wow and good job. I'm willing to bet your going to have more company down that way now.

Awesome fish and I have no doubt that's a 58 pounder but are you sure about that girth number? 49" X 35" = mid to upper 70's.
Either way,

Something I did different today that may have helped...
I always brine my bait in bottled water and rock salt, but today I added a bottle of Pautzke Nectar, something Val Perry turned me onto. I used to use the Nectar a lot in Alaska in my brines when I trolled for salmon, but the last two years I've mainly just been mooching hoochies or pink worms so I got away from doing it. Anyway, today I was using a bottle of the green Nectar in my brine, not really for color, but to help mask any unwanted scents on my baits. I add the Nectar to roe all the time, but today was the first time in a while that I added it to the anchovy/herring brine.
