Default How loud is the hoot of an owl?

OK- I'm mostly a city boy so although I hear owls occassionally while camping and fishing, I have never heard one like a month ago at Swift Res.
Usually the owls I hear are pretty muffled sounds-not very loud, and VERY ventriloquisty(is that a word?)- near impossible to tell which direction the sound is coming from. But one morning at the first hint of light in the east, we heard apparently an owl hoot with the voice of an American Idol stars' voice! A loud HOOT, HOOT ,HOOT, HOOT, HOOT!!!! Shortly after, three more hoots and then quiet. We thought maybe some guy on shore camping might have been playin' with us???!!! But we decided he would've kept it up in that case:smile:

If that was truly an owl- I am way impressed! I'd like to hear it again- that was the first time in my life I've heard an owl with that kind of volume.

Have you heard LOUD owls before?

T for T, I once saw an owl hoot. Thats right saw! I was out with my dogs one winter morning, just before sunrise. I was walking along a ridgeline heading east, so the horizon was beginning to turn orange.

About forty feet from where I stood, an owl sat sillouetted in the top of an old juniper. It reared its head, then bobbed forward harder than you ever would expect, letting out a chain of hoots. The loudness startled me. It was as if the owl was hurling the hoot with every once of strength it possessed.

I suspect variables such as temperature, humidity, wind, and terrain serve to muffle or amplify the sound of the hoot. In any case, it sure is a great sound to hear!

Cool Re: How loud is the hoot of an owl?

Naturally great horned owls are the loudest ones, but I think barn owls have the best h**ters

What John said about distance and terrain muffling the sound is true. Owl calls can travel distances measured in miles if the conditions are right.
As a one-time owl impressionist, I can tell you that mimicking an owl is NEVER as loud as the real thing - we don't have the right kinda pipes.
I have several times picked up calls from owls that turned out to be around a mile away, and I've witnessed calls up close and personal too. VERY COOL, and quite loud.
I may have a tape that could help you identify your mystery bird, if you're interested pm me.

How loud is the hoot of an owl? The bigger question should be, How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop?

The answer is three. I have barn owls visit, you can hear them clearly inside with the windows closed.
