Default Kid's Coyote Clinic - Details!

We're still on for Saturday, January 14th, from 8:30 - 1:00. The Albany Rifle and Pistol Club has graciously offered us the use of the clubhouse at the range for the clinics and displays.

As I said earlier, we're going to do a (much) scaled-down version this year, without the check-in/check-out and big prizes, but I still think we can have some fun and share some good information.

We'll have a wide variety of calls to listen to - and try - along with camo and gear. We'll discuss rifles, calibers, and bullets to use, but won't have any actual live-fire at the range. We even have a guest speaker who has written the book on calling coyotes in Oregon.

In addition, we'll share some information on the furbearer side of predator hunting, and talk about night calling as well.

Sign-in time is 8:30, and we'll have some refreshments to get us going. The climics will start at 9:00am and we'll try to wrap up by 1:00 so everyone can go hunting!

Here are the directions to the club, and if you have any questions, ask 'em here so everyone can share in the answers.

Hope to see you and your son or daughter there!

From I-5
Take Exit 228 onto Hwy 34. Go east (toward Lebanon) on Hwy 34 to Seven-Mile Lane (at flashing light).
Turn south (toward Eugene) onto Seven-Mile Lane.
Go 5 miles to a sweeping curve to the left.
At the curve, turn right onto Boston Mill Road
Go 2 miles to the club

From Hwy 99W
Go down (or up) Hwy 99W to Shedd. Turn east (toward Lebanon) on Boston Mill Road (at north end of Shedd).
Go 2 miles, cross freeway. The Club is just over the freeway on the right.

From Hwy 34 (between Lebanon and I-5)
Just east of I-5, turn south (toward Eugene) onto Seven-Mile Lane (at flashing light). Go 5 miles to a sweeping curve to the left. Turn right onto Boston Mill Road (at the curve)
Go 2 miles to the club.

Hey Rusty aren't you just a couple years to old for a kids clinic???

I would be there with my kid if we didn't already have a cub scout deal on the calendar.

Rusty, that red light can only be appreciated in the dark. At first you will be doing this trying to see something coming in the dark Then when something does come, you realize you didnt need to be looking so hard, its kinda like Rudolph on Steroids when those red eyes are out in the darkness.

Wife caught me googling lightforce today I tried to tell her it was a star wars video game for the kids but I dont think she bought it

I am laying low on the lightforce for the moment, but I am still looking for a deal on one shhhhhh......

Skein you have rought back many memories of chasing Coyote's. I started calling in 1972 (at 16). I just loved it when it would snow 4-6 inches and then turn cold, 0 to -10. I would grab the skies and off I would go to chase the wiley one. I haven't gone in years since it is a 6 hr. drive to my old stomping grounds. I still have all my snow camo and my gun still has white tape on it. Have fun on the 14th.

Hey Guys,
I came into this conversation midstream. Is this clinic open to all comers or is it limited? Also, is there a required donation/fee to attend or what's the scoop? This sounds way cool and my son is drooling to check it out. Oh ya... what is the age limit?

I tend to think of a kid as someone who is too young to vote. Originally I had it broken into two categories, 15 and under and 16-18, but this year at least, it's anyone too young to vote.

And no, there's no entry fee. Let's just get together and have some fun talking about a different kind of hunting.

Glad you're going to be there!

I assume that the gun club is private??? Any chance that we could do a little shooting on a range after the teaching is over???

Three cheers for Jim for putting on the clinic. We filled the room and all gained from the clinic. There were quite a few young smiling faces and they sucked up the info like a sponge. Thanks again and job well done.

Jim,

Thank you for all of the time and great information that you shared with us. I know my son is now begging to get out hunting coyotes. He kept repeating some of the things that he learned from you and as soon as we got home, he grabbed one of my calls and started practicing. I know you got me excited about it also.

Thank you for everything!

Glad you guys made it and had fun. We couldn't make it.
I forgot my son had a commitment to go to the grandparents
for the weekend and ride his motorcycle.
Funny thing is we saw 1 coyote cross Hwy 224 between Carver & Eagle creek. Then I saw 2 more coming back down from Goerge Fire Station to back down to Hwy 224.
Thats 3 yotes crossing the road in like 30 minutes. Go figure.

Man, that sounds like a win-win deal for me. If you go out and don't call any in, I can say, Yep, you were lousy students. If you call a truckload I can say, Yep, just like I taught ya.

It was great to meet everyone, and have a chance to share the passion. You guys and gals were just plain fun to spend a day with. Thanks for making the trek down.

Jim thanks for the class it was great, my boy loved it and I think that the wife thought more of it than she thought she would. My boy liked the red spot light and thinks that all our rifles need one.
We tried the calls Sunday night out by Four corners off the Geo Millican Hwy. and had the dogs reply, I had not tried that before and thought that was real cool and decided to hunt them this morning, It was snowing pretty hard and the wind was blowing but set up and started calling off and on and had a coyote come in right behind my boy to about 20 yards and then he winded us. I didnt have a shot and the boy didnt see him. I went with the 12 ga. and should of had the 30.06 , we had to set up aways apart because there wasnt alot of trees with good shooting lanes around. Even though he didnt see the dog he saw how close the tracks got and he is hooked hard on the dogs now.

Thanks again Chris and family

p.s. the dog took about 7 mins. to come in
