Not sure if I can still dip smelt or not. The old back isn't what she use to be. Anyone know of any Markets/stores who will have a good deal In Portland area on fresh smelt? ........
Actually here in North Cali, I go to Ray's Sentry Market and ask the butcher to order some. Its usually available this time of year and its fairly cheap. We use the seal-a-meal to package it in small quantities. Perhaps your mkt can do the same.
Ive used the winco kind and caught plenty of fish on them. Alot of people say they are garbage. But keep in mind make sure u get the Alaskan Smelt not the surf smelt.
I cant honestly tell you. Ive heard alot of people say surf smelt just dont work... and I mean alot I mean atleast 30-40 people. I just meant that I think people think winco carries surf smelt.
Well I just reserved 6 lbs of fresh smelt from winco. They said it was ocean smelt and they didn't know what Alaskan smelt where. Did I just waste my money or have they worked for people?

Some winco's sell the Alaskan river smelt and some sell sea smelt.
Sea smelt= bad for sturgeon. I've used lots of the river smelt and as long as you not fishing next to someone with fresh columbia river smelt it will work fine. I bought sea smelt once. If you bought sea smelt bring a back up bait....
Good luck.
So the 6lbs I ordered from winco is garbage? They said it's ocean smelt is that stuff not working or what? Anyone still getting sturgeon to eat it? just wondering before I go pick it up...thanks
i think ocean is the same as alakan at winco. its definitely not surf smelt .I bought 23 pounds .I'm sure it will work great, it looks just like the bi mart/joes stuff
Stopped at extreme marine in scappoose today. She just got a bunch of fresh not yet frozen smelt this afternoon. 9 dollars a pound
