Re: For the Marshbum

Bah, there's a simple explanation for this behavior.

Every now and then, a dyed-in-the-wool park duck shooter sees the light, crosses the great divide, and become a diver waterfowler.

Since...

Re: Gotta love bluebird days

Great post. Love those green headed blues.

We shot 28 a week before the season ended on the Lower River. Only one was a lesser. We seem to have all the greaters in Oregon concentrated in...

Re: diver hunters

If I ask what folks are using for ... I dunno ... let's say decoy bags, will you all throw up a bunch of sic (as in the good sense) pictures of dead divers and sea ducks?

We need a little...

Re: diver hunters

No worries man. People don't like to eat them, and will grow tired of picking them, so back to park ducks they'll go.

All the better for the rest of us.

Re: diver hunters

To be more specific, you're using the "Heavy Duty Mainline 1/4" Solid Braid" rather than than the "Mainline".

I think I'm using the "Mainline".

Both excellent, but having now used both, I'd go...

Re: diver hunters

Pretty much the same as Jon.

I bought 140' lines from Doctari, cut a few in half to make 70' lines.

The anchors are custom. I used a "sierra cup" from REI as the mold. You'll see why this is...

Re: Finally after 12 years got my #1 Trophy Bird

One heck-uv-a pochard, to be sure. That is a very bright red head!

Nice bird, and thanks for sharing.

Re: Diver rig

That one closest to the camera looks like it is sinking a bit

Nice spread. Are you running a layout rig?

Re: Diver rig

Ain't that the truth. So many "diver hunters" the last two weekends. The bluebills flying around had PhDs and were very, very shore shy.

I would also say that motion in the decoy spread is a big...

Re: Diver rig

It's all about the dropper. Space them no less than one dropper length. This keeps the droppers from getting tangled. So if the dropper is 3 feet, I'd go no less than 3 feet. Likely, I'd go 4 or...

Re: Diver rig

Eh...

I figure it's part of the game. If you can't stand the heat, out of the kitchen must you go... or something like that.

(sorry for poking holes)

Re: Diver rig

48

That's 4 long lines of a dozen each. A manageable number of lines giving you the opportunity and flexibility of arranging them in a pattern that matches the flight of the birds.

Re: Diver Questions??

I have been burned by the "no white face patch" a few times. That's primarily what I use to avoid shooting hens.

The first thought I had when I saw your photos was "oh, that's a hen with no face...

Re: A waterfowling tradition

I think of that guy, and the fellas he ran with, every time I do this. They are part of the great tradition, and can understand the calling us diver hunters have, to be separate from park duck...

Re: 7 for 7 Blues

Finally, a worthy limit! Now that's something that will get a guy going. I smell them frying right now... love those divers. Sure beats smacking park ducks.

Re: A Noble Limit

Hey Jon, nice limit and all, I suppose, if you're into that sort of thing... but the really interesting thing about this thread is the lettering on the back of that boat.

Now that is a gem :)
