View Full Version : Expert opinions on Motion Marine anchor roller?

I'm thinking about getting one for the bow of my new (used) boat because I like the idea of having a place for my anchor to ride when trailered or on the water. Does anyone have input on how well it works? Any suggestions or advice on installing it or using it?

Thanks!!

I have put them on 2 different sleds with great success. I was not able to find another type that compared. I through-bolted with extra backing washers for stability. Both of these sleds were older so appearance was not critical. When I get a new sled I may consider welding it on. Good luck and tight lines!

I have one and seems to work just fine.

I always zip tye my anchor for long rides on the road but I'm sure it won't go anywhere as I have had the boat in some pretty rough stuff and have not lost an anchor yet.

I would buy one again.

They work well. I cross drilled my anchor, and anchor bracket, so I could insert a cable lock for road transport and/or security.

I've got one and it works ok, until you try to pull the anchor up over the rubber roller, at which time the plastic zip ties on the anchor release pop off. It also pops braided dacron as well.

I like the MM better than some of the other ones out there. It's simple and it works. I've never had any issues with it breaking zip ties and never felt then need to drill and pin the anchor down. I just wrap the chain around a cleat. Three different boats, same results.

I used to have the same problem with grabbing the ties. What I did to fix that problem is move the roller forword. Drilled two new holes and it works perfect now. When ready to pull anchor, I just move forword and then put the rope in the bucket. Anchor pulls right up and stays. Works for me!

I've had the MM style on both of my boats. Work good, no problems.

I wnet one step farther. I got a roller bracket and bolted it to the bottom of the MM bracket. The roller is out just a little further than the top one. I now have no rope chaffing and the anchor comes over the top much eaiser.

Any chance you could snap a digital photo of that application?

Trap50 - Great Improvement! Wow, that is so simple and cool

Did you fabricate the roller's bracket or is it off-the-shelf?

I use 18# and 24# river anchors with usually a single ziptie and I like the Motion Marine fine. I can see where if you're hauling up really heavy anchors that other beefier bracket (Big Water?) would be a better choice.

anchors I use are 32 and 45 lbs.

Thanks. That makes sense as I've had a problem with the zip ties breaking. I looked for some 100 pound test ones, but could only find 75 pound test.

If your zip ties are breaking try taking an extra wrap around before pushing the zip tie through the eye.

I built my drop and I don't have to lift the anchor up and in. Works very good for me. I do have to give it a little bump to deploy.

I have the North River 1. It's pretty much the same as the MM one, but I like the roller better on the NR 1 as it has a groove for the rope to stay centered.

I bought it off the shelf and cut it down.

I like the Motion Bracket.

Mounted them on two boats so far. Used for both 25 and 45lb anchors. Zip ties break one every so often but not so it is big pain - I do use two ties however. Make sure you also install the rubber achor shaft holder to avoid scratching your diamond plate.

I like the up over cradle hold-down for going down the road or when you are running around. Those jam-cleats will let go every so often and when they do, you could have a real emergency on your hand if you going more than 10mph. Imagine your anchor hitting the water at 30mph while you are running up some skinny water - that 300ft of line will run out real quick if it doesn't get wrapped around a cleat our your windshield first. Also imagine your anchor hitting the pavement after you bounced over some dip or bump - man what a mess that would make of your bottom, brakelines, axle, etc...

Worth the effort of having lock down/lift up in my book.

Trap50 - thanks, I'll be visiting FMS today to see if they have a roller&bracket that can be modified to fit.

What size boat and what kind of water are you using the 18 and 24 pound anchor in? Thanks.

boater,

Ya, works good. I also put a couple of UHMW blocks inside of it to keep it in place. Also I have a bolt, for now, running through the drop so it won't fall out as this time of the year because I don't anchor. I have a 8 foot chain to attach when I head back down to the Columbia for Sturgeon fishing.

Also in this picture I have a 5/8" wide zip tie(the white one) on the top end of the anchor. I haven't tried it yet but I don't think it will break as easy as those smaller zips.

Alan, I see your in MT, so I don't know if you can relate to the waters?

I have a Hewes 179 Searunner.

The 18# anchor is for anchoring in soft currents like the Multnomah Channel and parts of the Columbia. The 24# is for hard bottom/fast currents of the Columbia. Also, 6' to 14' of chain is used (I keep an 8' length with qwik links on board for when it's needed).

Thanks, I can relate to the columbia. I fish the clearwater and flathead rivers in ID & MT. Rocky bottom, 4'-10' deep where I anchor, usually pretty good current. I'm building a rocker style stainless anchor and wanted to get the sizing down for my boat, a 14' Midjet sled.

The MM are good but check out 3 Rivers Marine, they build one that you can switch from columbia anchor to a river anchor system. They are quite a bit stouter than the MM and are machined and welded. Overall they hold the anchor better. They cost a little more on the front but they are nice.

I had one. Sold it after one years use.

Bought a Big Water unit. Unlike the MM unit, it works very well, with no modifications or excuses.

I shopped for anchor holders about 3 years ago. I looked at the MM unit, and decided (like Flatfish), the Big Water was superior in design, and without modification. I haven't been sorry... JMHO...

jet, Yup I did with help from my welder buddy. Kinda matches my stainless steel trailer.

Square tubing and filled it full of lead. 24#s I think it weighs.

Only have used it a couple of times but it does work. I go with the chain for Sturgeon on the Columbia so now I just have the rope attached as I don't need chain.
