Thinking about a 16ft lodge series. Any suggestions on motors? 2 or 4 stroke 25hp+. Brands/reliability and performance? Is 25hp enough for 2-3 persons and gear for the day? My old 15ft Alaskan with 15hp 2 stroke would do ~24mph solo and 20 with 1 buddy and gear. Would really like to increase speed if possible and still be able to troll. The no mixing is quite alluring with a 4 stroke but I really don't know the differences between 2's and 4's.

Am I just full of questions or what. :help:

Why not go with the 18' and a 40 or 60hp? The 16' is a nice wide, stable boat and a 25hp 4-stroke should do just fine. Go talk with the boy's at Stevens in Milwaukie. Dan, Tyrone, Chris or #6. They will give you all the advice you need and get you on your way.

Good luck!

Freak'em out and ask for number 6.

Thanks for the reply. I am just trying to stay with-in budget. Rule of thumb I have always gone by is "don't get something you can't afford to operate". Garage and tow vehicle are limiting factors. Even with a swing tongue an 18'er will not fit it's house. I suppose a mooring cover would work but I like the garage better for safety from tweekers and other lowlifes.

Made the trip to Stevens already. They do have a great reputation but the guy I spoke with didn't seem to be interested in selling anything and I left feeling that all I did was interupt his nap . Maybe I will pay them another visit and try that #6 dude.

Hey bud. I had a 16 ft lodge ss for about four years. I had a 30 merc four stroke on it. It did ok with just me, but when i fished two other guys and all the gear, it took alot to get on a plane. Sometimes had to have one of the guys get up on the bow to get it up. That boat is rated for a max of a 50 and i would suggest going with that. You will be alot happier. Good luck with that boat. I still miss mine. Fished it all over. But had to trade it in for a alumaweld..Still miss it though.

I've had a 16ft Lodge and a 25hp /4 stroke for 5 yrs now.
With 2 buddies and some gear on board it takes awhile and some careful load positioning to get up on plane. You aren't going very far or very fast with a load. It also is not a good rough water boat. You will get wet! It can be safe enough if you take it easy but a little rough water will slow you down in a hurry.

On the up side- I love this 4-stroke! Awesomely quiet-no blue smoke to inhale- no oil to mix. Incredibly efficient. I can troll two- 12 hour days non-stop and still have gas left in the 6 gallon tank! The boat is light(1500lbs with motor, gear, and trailer)- so my 4cyl. Nissan tows it just fine.

For my purposes- mostly lake trolling for trout or kokanee- I have only about a 5-10% wish to occasionally go faster- the rest of the time I am extremely happy with the setup. By myself or with another person it will go between 20-25 mph easily- that will get me back and forth on any lake I fish and it will still troll perfectly at idle for hours and hours!

If you are intending to go out on the Columbia- that's not a problem- but if you need to then make long runs of 2-5 miles to get to your fave spot- you won't like the 25hp.

Hope this is useful to you, Jim

I have a good friend who has a 16 Lodge with a Merc 40 4-stroke. He upgraded from the 25 that came with it because it was underpowered.

Just FWIW.

Curious?
Whats wrong with the 15' Alaskan? If it was me, I would get another one, get a 15 horse 4-stroke with tilt and have a blast. 15' Alaskans plane with a 6 hp motor, and are still the driest ride out there. Plus, where do you plan on fishing that faster is better? Ranger builds some really nice fast boats, but depends on your end use what you need, AND the dollars you want to spend. just my .02

I have had a 16ft lodge series for 3 years. First year with the 25hp 2 stroke and then upgraded to a 50 4stroke. I use it in lakes, rivers and bays. I can troll with a trolling plate for srpingers and I can be on plane at Waldport with all my crab pots and three large men. I have a tiller with tilt and rigged up a toggle for the tilt on my seat box. This really helps getting on plane with full load. I have been reall happy with this setup. However, I agree with Trollin4trout that it is not a rough water boat.

go 40hp+ 25 will work for a while then you will want more speed, more passengers, or to go into the mountains. I have a 25 on a 15' and wish it were a 60. Now I have to upgrade to a 21' NR, would have been cheaper to go with a 60hp from the start

Thanks for all of the replies. They have all been very helpfull. Went back to Stevens and found that #6 was nappy dude! He was alert and very helpful today. I guess everyone is entitled to an off moment. Possibly the post lunch snoozies. The service was great and will definatley be rewarded with my hard earned $$. Their outstanding reputation is well deserved. :applause:

Read Jenny's House Keeping post on the main page. Didn't know if my earlier post was taken as bashing sponsors. It was certainly never intened to be that.

I have not been contacted about breaking any rules so I don't know. Just wanting to set things right.

Thanks for the reminders Jenny. :flowered:

My brother has a 16' Lodge Series with a 40HP Merc on it. He started with a 25HP and he kicked himself in the butt for going with the 25. I told him it would'nt be enough for 2-3 guys and I was right.

The 40 is a perfect fit for the 16'er.

The Merc is nothing but problems though. He's bought it new 6 months ago and its left him stranded on the water twice.

Just keep in mind. You'll have a hard time finding anybody say "I wish my boat didn't have so much power" Get the bigger motor.

The 16 Lodge is quite a large boat with a fair amount of hull drag from the five keel bottom, the smallest main motor that I normally sell them with is a 40 and I have had two customers come back and upgrade to 50's. Most of my guys are fishing the bay at Gold Beach or going out of Brookings but those applications are not unlike the Columbia/Willamette environment

My neighbor has a 16' smokercraft with a 40 and 9.9. He said it came with 25hp he quickly replaced with the 40. I've ridden in his boat, I would think 40hp would be the minimum you would want.

I have a 16' lodge side console that originally came with 25 hp 2 stroke. Down here in the thick air it would run about 24 with just me and 22-23 with a buddy. Went to Wickiup Resevoir and with just me it would plane slowly then reach a top speed of about 21. With my buddy we would not make it on to plane.

Upgraded to a 40 horse 2 stroke. No problem planing now, even at Wickiup. Top speed is about 34, very comfortable cruising speed of 25 with 3/4 throttle. Power tilt and trim is very nice to have along with the oil injection.
