I've been a long time lurker on this site, and decided it was finally time to jump in. I don't have an extraordinary fishing tale to tell for my first post, but I do have some great memories of fishing with Mom.

Mom is an avid fly-fisherwoman, and has shown me a lot of what she's learned over the years. I think she still has the first fly I tried to tie. I had snuck down to her tying bench, and tied the only pattern I could remember on the biggest hook I could find- a Spruce Fly on about a size 1/0 hook.

We've taken some great fishing trips in the last 10 years or so, but one memory in particular illustrates how fishing has always been part of my life. I was in junior high, and had gotten tired of the prepubescent pettiness of my classmates. After Christmas break, my folks decided to let me try home school. Mom thought I needed to supplement my academic work with some physical activity, a P.E. class of sorts. So, being that it was early January on the north coast, she took me steelhead fishing! It was freezing cold and we didn't catch anything, but what a great day!

My husband and I are expecting a little keeper in late December. I hope to pass along a love for the outdoors that was passed down to me. And maybe I will find a size 1/0 Spruce Fly in my vise someday.

Welcome! You'll not find a better bunch of folks than have collected here on the Ifish Fly Board.

(And bunches of us have little keepers too.)

Thanks for the welcome! Most flyfishermen I've met are good people, willing to share their knowledge and experiences. I'm sure ifish flyfishers are no exception, and I look forward to being part of the group.

I too was lucky enough to have a mother who was in love with fly fishing.

Still remember the look on the Deschutes guide's face when we showed up...a ten year old kid and a forty some year old woman...

And the look after her first cast (hook up with a 18" bow) was priceless!

Great post! My wife and I have a "little keeper" of our own who I hope will get bit by the fly fishing / outdoors bug too! Welcome aboard.

I'd have to disagree that you don't have a great fishing story! That's a great intro! Welcome to ifish and to the flyfishing board in particular!

Any Mom that takes her daughter steelheading on the North coast in January has got things figured out!

Welcome!

That's great, santiam. It looks like the fishing gene will have to be passed down on the maternal side in our growing family, too. My husband's passion is road building. He gets excited about rocks and heavy equipment, not fish.

We took a trip to central Oregon last spring, and all he could talk about was the endless potential of all the rock over there. Who cares about checking out some silly little trout streams when there's so much great rock to marvel at?

Welcome aboard. It is great to have good memories of your parents. Luckily I have some with my mom as well. Dad was never in the picture. I hope to create some good opportunities for some memories with my kids. Thanks for sharing.

We got some looks, that's for sure...not a typical rural oregon scene...

My dad never really bought into the whole flyfishing thing...fished a bit with gear for steelies but that was it. Meanwhile, mom and I were pounding the Metolius, Santiam, and everything and anything in between...

Unfortunately, she rediscovered horses after I moved away so now doesn't fish much...and if you thought flyfishing was an expensive addiction...well, heh. But she's happy with them and she can still cast better than 95% of the guys on the stream.
