Electric winch cable replacement

I have an electric winch on my trailer that constantly binds up inside due to the cable being pulled into itself. I've decided to replace it with a fabric cable (the flat kind you see on most newer hand winches) but now I am getting nervous as I notice none of the electric winches use anything but the steel cable.

Is there any reason I should stick with the cable that is on there now?

I dont know if you can replace it with a strap or not, but re spooling with cable is pretty cheap, i spooled my wich 6 months ago, for under 20 bucks at nw logging supply. i went from cable to strap on my manual winch though, dont remember the price though.
