I'm considering upgrading my kicker on my Styker Sportjet. I don't have a kicker bracket and would prefer to clamp directly to the transom. However, when I lay out the Yamaha Longshaft T8 profile, the top of the propeller is a couple inches above the bottom of the boat. Anyone have experience operating in this manner? Thanks.

I think they make and extra long shaft. I have a NR sportster with a transum cut out and if I remember correctly the T8 they spec for this application is a Xtra long shaft.

One thing you may have a problem with is reverse. If the water doesnt flow under the boat in reverse it will just dump into the back of the transom. Thus not moving the water under the boat and fighting the thrust of reverse.

Going forward you should have no probs. Do look into the extra long shaft. I think it gives you an extra inch and a half or so.

Good luck, I love my extra long shaft!

If I remember correctly, the XLong T8 has a 25" shaft.

That is exactly how my kicker sets up on my sled. As mentioned before, forward works great, but reverse is a joke.

There is one benefit though. When your in shallow water back trolling or back bouncing you have a few inches more clearance. Something to think about depending on the type of fishing that you do.

There are some brackets that you can adjust on the fly. I'm not sure the manufacturers name, but have seen them at boat shops. I'm not talking about the power type but manual adjust. Try West Marine or Cabellas.

I have a merc 9.9 extra long shaft on my stryker sportjet. I think the long shaft is 25" and the extra long shaft is 30". The extra long shaft is the perfect length.

I wish I would have gone with the 8hp, I had to get the prop turned down to get the trolling speed low enough.

Go with the extra long shaft and you'll be fine! My 04 Intruder has the kicker mounted on the transom, with the "sport fishing package" (hot box and cutout). I kept my '99 4-stroke merc that was a long shaft but I had to put a "bay kit" on it to make it an extra long shaft. Works fine.

Long shaft is 20", extra long is 25". The XL is what you want.
