Howdy!

First post, although I've been reading y'all for a few weekes now. As I understand it, I'm supposed to share a bit about myself in my first post, so here goes..

Moved to OR last year from Jackson, WY. What a beautiful state you have. It's really great to be only an hour from the coast and an hour from the mountains/gorge all at the same time. Living in Jackson, I was used to being able to drive five minutes and be on an epic, significant trout stream like the Snake or Flat Creek (although I spent way more time on the green, crystal creek and the hoback to avoid the pressure.) So in that respect, I'm suffering some withdrawal. On the other hand, those redsides on the Big D are the strongest fish I've ever had the honor to meet. Shame it takes two hours to get there. Anyway, back to the subject matter of the posting:

I will be fly fishing on Tuesday, and want to make the most of my time. I will not be spending 4 hours on the road, so the deschutes, metolius etc. are out. So I've narrowed it down, but have no idea if I've done so wisely, and could use your sage advice:

1. The wilson. I did buy some steelhead gear, but am a trout bum at heart, and prefer that style of fishing. I understand there are cutts on the wilson year 'round, but haven't seen any in 3-4 trips out there. Any favorite spots for the trouters out there? Alternatively, is this a good time to break out the steelheading rig on this river? Flies?

2. Nehalem. I have found this to be a beautiful river, but haven't found any trout there, despite the books and reports mentioning their year round existence. Any thoughts?

3. Washougal? Fished this once, but haven't had any luck.

4. Others?

I guess this is a desparate cry for help, but my overall question is:

Where O where are there trout within 1 hour of hillsboro?

try the upper clack and its tribs. not a lot of big fish but there are a lot of small cutts always willing to take and put up a fight. I say to use a 4wt if you have one. Also Coho in the sandy or Clack would be good bet also. rp

Thanks Riverkeeper.

Did some searchin' on other stuff in the portland area over the past few years and found some excellent advice there as well.

This is one dedicated group of FlyDishers. Hope I can keep up! Aren't y'all married? My kitchen passes are too few and far between these days, what with a 2 year old!

Whoops. Thanks Ryan, too! How far is that stretch of Clack from Hillsboro? Looks like about 2 hours away!

Happily married with a 3 and a 5 yr. old. Step one is to introduce the wife and kid to your new Ifish family. After you have successfully accomplished this, we will move on to step two.
Welcome aboard.

Will do! It's kinda catch 22 right now (or catch as ctch can.) Not much time to get out fishin, ergo not much time to intro wife to community, ergo not much time to fish, etc. :-)

Did just find out that I have a sweet full day to get out on Sunday though. Gonna go to the Crooked, if I hear good reports. I'll make that a separate post. Anyone else want to add to the good advice on this thread? Anyone else have any good spots within an hour of Hillsboro?

Robert - What were you doing in Jackson? I spent two of the best years of my life in Moran... 220 inches of snow one December and, best of all, met my wife there. Ever get back to Soda Lake in the Gros Ventre Wilderness?... those football-size cutts could be challenging. I have travelled on five continents and have yet to find a place more beautiful that the Tetons.

Hey NF.

I definitely went to Soda Lake (the gros ventre one) a bunch of times. Those are some monsters. Used to terrorize them with streamers. Althought he last time I went there, there were a bunch of dead fish all over the place and some wierd foamy green hugging the shore. Too sad.

My first trip there was kind of an adventure. Had just moved to Jackson and a friend and me decided at the last minute to head up there after dinner (August). We had just bought these float tubes the week before and wanted to try them out. Neither had been there, and as you know the ride is pretty hairy. It was dark by the time we got there. narrowly avoided a big buck at the last minute. So we set up tent, did the requisite drinking and inflated our tubes. by this time it was deep into the night, and we were pretty tanked. set up a light on the bank so we could get back, and shoved off.

In my life, to this day, in all my travels, I have never seen stars as bright as those the night I floated into the middle of a moonless night on soda lake.

I agree the tetons are among the most beautiful places in the world.

Livin' in Moran must have been fun. Stayed at the Lodge a few nights. Wow. best view in the tetons. Did you do a lot of snake river fishin? Used to love Schwabachers and especially Blacktail Pond; although to avoid the pressure, I spent way more time down by the wilson bridge. Spent many december days fishin' the tailwaters behind the dam, above the eagle's nest.

Isn't it funny how much more willing you are to give up your spots when you don't live in a place anymore?
