Howdy!
First post, although I've been reading y'all for a few weekes now. As I understand it, I'm supposed to share a bit about myself in my first post, so here goes..
Moved to OR last year from Jackson, WY. What a beautiful state you have. It's really great to be only an hour from the coast and an hour from the mountains/gorge all at the same time. Living in Jackson, I was used to being able to drive five minutes and be on an epic, significant trout stream like the Snake or Flat Creek (although I spent way more time on the green, crystal creek and the hoback to avoid the pressure.) So in that respect, I'm suffering some withdrawal. On the other hand, those redsides on the Big D are the strongest fish I've ever had the honor to meet. Shame it takes two hours to get there. Anyway, back to the subject matter of the posting:
I will be fly fishing on Tuesday, and want to make the most of my time. I will not be spending 4 hours on the road, so the deschutes, metolius etc. are out. So I've narrowed it down, but have no idea if I've done so wisely, and could use your sage advice:
1. The wilson. I did buy some steelhead gear, but am a trout bum at heart, and prefer that style of fishing. I understand there are cutts on the wilson year 'round, but haven't seen any in 3-4 trips out there. Any favorite spots for the trouters out there? Alternatively, is this a good time to break out the steelheading rig on this river? Flies?
2. Nehalem. I have found this to be a beautiful river, but haven't found any trout there, despite the books and reports mentioning their year round existence. Any thoughts?
3. Washougal? Fished this once, but haven't had any luck.
4. Others?
I guess this is a desparate cry for help, but my overall question is:
Where O where are there trout within 1 hour of hillsboro?
