Hey all! Just found out my brother in law is coming out from the midwest at the end of the month (27th - 1st) and would love to get him out and into some salmon/steelhead. We will be on a fairly short leash - One full day trip, 2 or 3 half days potentially. He fishes the Muskegon, Manistee, and various Michigan & Wisconsin rivers. We have done the Wilson, Three Rivers, and Deschutes before together. Where would you all suggest we go for a good one day trip? I don't feel I know the Deschutes well enough to get him into some steelhead there, although I have fished it unsuccessfully many times. That probably has something to do with it. Are any of the other coastal streams better to hit other than the Wilson - I just love that river and it pulls me back time and time again! I will be spey casting, B-I-L will be single handing it...
Many thanks in advance...

The clack should have some fresh steel in it by then it is a bit early but there should be a few. Also the NUsstucca is a pretty river. rp

I disagree about the Clackamas for the period mentioned (27 Oct. to 1 Nov.). There will only be late run summer fish in the Clackamas. The winter run now “peaks” in March, with stragglers appearing as early as Thanksgiving. The same applies to most Westside Oregon steelhead runs (there are some Westside steelhead runs that peak in Dec.- Jan., but even these runs don’t have any appreciable numbers of fish until Thanksgiving).
Coho season ends in most Oregon waters 31 October and the fish will be dark by then.
I would recommend fishing the eastside, specifically the Deschutes. There should be fish from Maupin to Trout Creek. This is my favorite time to fish the Deschutes since most of the drunk rafters are gone for the year. If you don’t connect with a steelhead, there are still many willing trout.

Thanks for the posts. Anyone interested in a potential camp out for one night? Looking to get up eeeaaarrrlllyy on Friday morning (28th) to hit the river in the morning for steelhead, fish for the day, camp somewhere along the river, then fish Saturday morning and be back on Sat. evening in time for dinner. I don't have a boat, so we'll be banking it.
Have camped at Harpam flats last year, but no luck. Fished upstream of the locked gate many times for trout also. May try downstream of Maupin this time. Went on a guided trip last year about this time without luck. Anyone have recommendations on campsites and fishing locations. Remember some names of spots like the pipeline (I think) but unsure of where on the river they actually are (Definitely different looking from a boat). Not looking for zipperlip spots, just unsure of where on the D to go and would like to feel I have a chance. In fact, Dan has said he wants to rent a two-hander for the trip and give it a go!! Another spey addict in the making....

Hey HazMatt... Daylight Savings isn't until that Saturday night/Sunday morning... so your itinerary for heading out "eeeaaarrrlllyy on Friday" is kind of moot because it's not really light enough to step in a river until right around 7AM (this week... in another 10 days, that could be 7:10 or even later) - give or take 5-10 minutes. It ain't June ya know?! Just an FYI... hope you have a great trip and a great visit!

True, however, we'll swing by somewhere to grab some b-fast and then get on the river as soon as possible - Probably plan on leaving around 3:30 or 4 AM...ie: Dan knows fishing is ok an hour before sunrise, so he'll look at the paper for when sunrise is and then want to be out there with a synchronized watch ready to throw a line. He is a 10 year old trapped in a 34 year old body. I am kind of worried about making back for dinner on Saturday night - Friends are driving up from Bend for it. He may ask to have them meet us on the river so we aren't later than they are.
I can't wait - we have a great time together. Last time we camped out on the Deschutes, He saw a "wolf" come out of the grass. Until the next morning when the "wolf" came over from the campsite down the road. The wolf ended up being a large husky... It was priceless. About as much as...ah nevermind. I'll just say, the closest medical facility to Maupin at 10PM and able to get a knat out of an ear is in The Dalles. I was trying to figure out what hatch was happening that night...
So anyone still want to come camping with us?

Looking at my little Deschutes map, may look to camp between Beavertail and Macks canyon. Anybody interested or going to be down that way on Friday/Saturday?
