So last time I posted I had asked Kaufmanns to bring in a 9wt Winston Ibis for me to try figuring I'd save some bucks on a discontinued model. I'd also asked for advice here and received some good stuff, especially considering what I paid for it . I took AndyK's advice about a 10wt minimum for Chinook pretty seriously. So today I get the call the Ibis is in, come check it out. I can say without reservation the built in China 9wt is nothing like the made in USA 7wt I have. That 9wt casted like a log, felt terrible.
So I try Scott A2 10wt and that felt pretty darn good and here's where I made a huge mistake. For comparison I asked if I could cast a Winston BIIx ( what was I thinking ?). Suffice it to say I couldn't get over the feel and control with the BIIx. I had a budget, but not anymore. At least some things in the budget are going to wait for a while now. The BIIx is now mine . I can't wait to hit the water in pursuit of Chinook.
So ultimately when my wife gives me that OMG you've lost your mind again look can I blame AndyK or just suck it up and take my lumps ? Naw, I'm gonna blame AndyK  and then try my darndest to catch fish like him ! Thanks AndyK !!

Why not, I get blamed for everything anyway :smash:!
As far as the Chinook, I heard from a good source that they are really biting on the coast. A certain guide located in Salem went 2 for 3 today on Chinook.

Absolutely blame AndyK! He's a rotten guy and a real troublemaker!!! I have a new 10wt outfit and 3 new flylines largely because of his advice and corrupting influence!
On the other hand that 10wt has fought 3 springers, with one to the bank, one nice summer steelhead, and a bruiser of a fall chinook! The new 7 and 8wt lines also have several steelhead each.
OK, maybe he's not all bad.

AndyK did it to me too ! Last year after catching my first Coho's on a fly with Andy I had to go out and dump $1000.00 on a 10 wt. and a new reel.
That Andy is a rascal....

Sounds like to me that Andy should be selling 10wts  and making some gas money to continue his corrupting ways :)
Giz...
Ps Blame Andy...he has broad shoulders.

After seeing the 10 wt trend I was wondering if this was some sort of insidious plot to raise the GNP and free up the trout streams for Stew all in one shot. After brief reflection I feel that while there may not be a plot ( sorry Stew) there is a trend.
AndyK is:
a) a good sport
b)generous with his knowledge
c) one hell of a fisherman or
d) all of the above.
Frankly I think d

Steve L,
It's a slippery slope you are starting down. Pretty soon that 10 is going to feel underpowered. You're going to start getting these crazy ideas about going after tuna on flyrods and you'll start coveting 12 weights. Multiple lines, tips, leaders, dozens of flies, big reels with huge drags, serious bucks. Once you've gotten that green stick in your hand everything else just seems like junk. I'm pretty sure they dunk the handles in morphine up there in Twin Bridges.
And don't get me started about their trout rods....

TF,
Too late ! I got a Ross Cimarron #5 with a Rio versitip package to go with the BIIx. Flies ? I had made a note this morning to pick up yet another box today, all the tying I've been doing has filled the other 5.
OK, who greased this slope ??

That's funny:
I have fly rods from 3 wt. all the way to Ten weight.
I would like to replace all of them with betters rods except my 10 wt.
What's wrong with me ? You'd think I was a millionare or something.
Actually: This is what I learned.
Typically when a novice buys a new rod what does he do ?
He casts it. It takes some experience with fishing to realize there's a lot more to it then how well it casts.
Most all my rods are way to fast. The tips are too stiff. I want medium rods or rods that have a nice feel to them while fighting a fish.
First new rod I will buy is a 3 wt. And then I want a nice 7wt. for the Deschutes. Beyond that I am happy with everything else.
I blame that on AndyK too. It is definately all his fault.

Steve,
May God have mercy on your checking account. Time to freeze your credit cards in a block of ice.
Most importantly, time to start a fishing slush fund that your wife doesn't know about! :yay: :yay: Oh crud, I hope she's not lurking....
And don't blame just AndyK. Once somebody gets a hold of one of those emerald beauties they just can't help themselves. My rods have lured several friends into the financial rocks.
Abalone,
I'm with you on the rod type. I always wanted faster and faster until I cast a Winston WT 4 weight. I love that rod for casting dry flies and emergent patterns. It might not belt the line quite as far out there like a faster action rod, but it's the most pleasant rod I've cast to date. I usually find that I don't catch that many trout when I'm fishing at the end of my casting range. My big sticks (9, 10, 12 weights) are faster action rods, but everything else is medium action.
