I hit something this past weekend and I'm looking for a place to buy a replacement skeg for my 70hp Yamaha. I can do the prep work myself, but does someone know a welder?

I know that the Tigard Stevens does skeg repair.

Dont dont dont dont weld that skeg on while it is still attached. You will boil your fluids and bust your seals. You may want to try a skeg guard if you have enough of the skeg left to bolt it onto.

I hear Ampro in Clackamas does good work. No personal experience, but have had a number of people recommend them. Good luck.

Beaver did mine a long time ago (Stevens used to farm the work out to them) but that was before the original owner sold the business.

Sigler's marine in portland farms theirs out to someone who did a great job on mine. I'm sure they will refer you to them.

Skegs can be rebuilt to look like new.

I believe many of the shops in the greater Portland area are sending the work out to Independant Marine in St.Johns, underneath and just upstream a couple blocks of the St.Johns Bridge.

My skeg was broken off my Honda90 when the boat was stolen and I was skeptical that it could be repaired without it looking like krap. But after Independant's rebuild it looks like new.

I also use them regularly to repair damaged props, about $45 is the typical prop charge.

Remember that when they repair the skeg they are actually adding material via the welding/heliarc process. If the person doing the job is not used to this type of work they can damage the lower unit with the heat, so be careful.
