On the early 90's johnsons 15hp (those little white ones)are they 50/1 or 100/1 I can't seem to find it on my motor.

It can be either 50-1 or 100-1. The most common usage ditates 50-1.
Here is what my manual states for 100-1 use.
A 100-1 mixing ratio is acceptable in certain circumstances after the motor is completely broken in and if the motor is used frequently. 100-1 should not be used if the motor is used intermittently and the periods of non use involve storage in areas with significant temperature and humidity changes.Internal rusting may result. 100-1 should not be used if the motor is subject to sustained high RPM operation.

I have a mid-90's 8 hp and it is 50/1. My suggestion - spend the extra cash and use the "Johnson" brand oil.

Quote from another website:"From 1985 to 1989, OMC recommended a 100 to 1 mix, this was written on a decal placed on motors of these years. The actual change back to the 50 to1 mixture was made sometime in 1989. There was a Technical Bulletin #2162 dated March 1986, for the mechanics to remove the decal, replace it with a 50/1 new decal & inform the owner, when the motor was serviced in an OMC repair shop. This was recommended for rental, commercial & heavy duty service engines. The suspicion apparently was that some motors, under the right conditions, if ran at a high RPM or under a load for extended periods of time, may seize due to lack of adequate internal lubrication"...Just an interesting tidbit. Not sure what changes took place after that.
I owned an old Johnson 6hp and I found the motor ran great with synthetic oil at about 75:1. If I ran 50:1 the motor fouled plugs, at 100:1 the plugs seemed a little too dry.
Obviously 50:1 is the recommended ratio, but if you find yourself fouling plugs, I wouldn't hesitate to play around with it a bit.

Hey Fishsticks, did you notice a significant difference running the OMC brand of oil? I have an older evinrude and now a johnson kicker. I've been using Quicksilver brand oil and it seems to run fine. Being new to the whole outboard thing, I don't have alot to compare with. I've also had people recommend yamalube  Decisions, decisions...
