I have lost 6 close, close friends in Afganistan and Iraq. The pain of loss is too great for me to even explain, and I cant begin to imagine the feelings of family members.
The only thing I could do was write letters to each of the familys about the time I spent with these guys. Three of them had children. You might think about writting a letter to the younger brother of your friend, explaining your friendship, stories, ect.
I know a guy whos brother was killed in Vietnam, and he still has the letters people wrote to him after his brother was killed, and he holds them very close to his heart.
I will be praying for the family.
