“I am the LORD, and there is no other;
apart from me there is no God.
I will strengthen you,
though you have not acknowledged me,
so that from the rising of the sun
to the place of its setting
men may know there is none besides me.
I am the LORD, and there is no other.
I form the light and create darkness,
I bring prosperity and create disaster;
I, the LORD, do all these things.” (Isaiah 45:5-7)
I must admit a part of me is not looking forward to this weekend. During times of natural disasters or national crisis, the question will come or one similar, “Why does God allow such destruction and suffering?” As believers we need not focus our attention on defending God; God is God and He doesn’t need us to come to His aid even if we could do such a thing.
The question is a difficult one to answer. I would much rather focus on God’s grace and on His unsearchable love for us, but that’s not the whole of God is it. Certainly God’s promise to His children is He ultimately will work all things for good according to His purpose. That doesn’t mean all things that happen will be “good” so to speak.
It’s been difficult to watch all that’s happening around the Gulf Coast. Why doesn’t God intervene and help those who are still suffering? It is within His power, but this is the action He has chosen. Why? I don’t know.
“I am the LORD, and there is no other.” That ultimately is the answer; He’s God I’m not, His ways are unsearchable and unknowable to our limited human minds. As with all things and all times such as these it is right to turn to God in prayer.
