I'm stuck down here for a year doing an internship and am trying to figure out how to catch a bass in these lakes. I don't have much experience with LM but have fished alot for SM in OR. I'm pretty close to Castaic, Pyramid, Piru, etc. I don't have a boat. Any info. would be great.

What RP said! I watched a really good show featuring lake Castiac. These guy`s were looking to set a new worlds record for the LM. They were using these HUGE plastic rainbow lures. I`m talking 12 to 14 inches long. The LM`s were just hammering them! :smash: Ff

The lures I saw these guy`s using were being made by a local company down in that direction. The lures looked just like a rainbow trout and were constructed to act like a crippled fish. Very lifelike. Made out of some soft pliable plastic. They were selling like hotcakes and the company couldn`t keep the shelves stocked up. They were getting some near record LM on them, like around 22# or so. Great show. These guy`s were sight fishing for those hogs and doing real well. Ff

I saw that show too. I thought they were crazy when they first tied them on.

The popular big bass lure for Castaic and Casitas(Ojai) is the Stocker Trout. Reports can be found from Turner's Outdoors in LA. They have a site somewhere too..

Wow... I guess thats why Sportsmans Warehouse has a bunch of them up here in the Northwest. 12 inch trout lures are all the rage on waters like Brownlee or any place north of So Cal.

Actually just read an article about success with swim baits in northern waters. Thinking about getting one as I know a lake that a rainbow trout swim bait just may work on getting some of them big ole bass in there to bite.

Thanks for all the tips. I was able to find a few bass in the Kern River a little further up north. I guess the fishing is pretty slow now in Castaic, etc. 'cause of the temp (low 80's). I'll have to give the swimbaits a try!

Yea, they use stocker rainbows as feed fish for the huge LM's!
