View Full Version : Things to think about when fishing for BIG bass!!

With fall coming fast you need to think about keeping the fishing odds MORE in your favor when you are going after BIG bass.
One of the biggest things people do wrong is they move around in there boat to much (fall fishing for shallow Monster L.M. bass) Every time you move around in your boat (big or small) you create pressure waves coming off your boat! Big bass are not rocket scientists, but they do not get BIG by being dumb either. Stay NEAR the center line of your boat and try to keep form moving around. The waves will not spook small to medium sized bass. But a smart old sow will not stick around or hit your lure if she senses strange noises or vibrations.
Also think about wearing camouflage. Or natural colored cloths. When I was guiding on silver I did this all the time!
If I think a big bass is at the location I am about to fish I will crouch down to try to keep the fish from seeing me. Staying near the level of the water will help you from spooking bass. So if you are tall remember that you will need to fish farther away from the fish than I do. But at times I will use this technique to help catch more bass.
As you are driving your boat to the next location that you are going to fish, point your boat strait at the spot and shut your big motor down early (about 50 yards minimum ). This will keep you wake from moving over the area you are about to fish and it will up your odds of getting that big bass to bite.
As you start fishing a spot start out with plastic lures and before you move on try a crank bait or spinner bait . If you fish a good spot and you start fishing it with a crank bait after about 3 or 4 casts if the BIG bass has not hit your lure is will move off the spot. You can make 20 casts in to the same spot before you make the fish move off. Soft casts with little to no splash is very important. Before you move on try the faster moving baits to catch any bass that may be triggered by that type of lure.
When fishing a good spot make lots of cast to all likely spots. If your spot is good you just need to find the location of the bass in that area. A lot of people go to a good spot and hit only the key individual spots and miss lots of bass because of that. This will help you pattern fish also.
When I plan a Vacation fishing trip in the fall I look for a NEW moon in the second half of the month of October. The bass feed at night less and so they need to feed up for winter in the day time more.
Spring time is a G R E A T time of year for catching lots of Monster bass.
Use NEW fishing line, it will be less likely to break when you get in to a monster bass. This is the time of year you need to check every thing with your gear (like the drag!). If you work on the things you can control in bass fishing then you will move the odds more into you favor! Luck is good but if you prepare and are ready for that bass of a life time you will more likely land the BIG FAT OL SOW BASS!!!!!!!!!
Any thing you can do to up your odds of landing more big you should start thinking NOW.
Good luck every one Fall is a great time for bass fishing!!!!

When I was guiding at silver I would get a fish OVER 4 pounds ever other fishing day in October. My personal best fall bass was 7 pounds 11oz :alert:  :bigshock: :yay: :smash:

It would be better to just go fishing with me this fall!!!
I'm going to post a calender of dates I have open to go fishing so people can book some time. I learn some things from every one, even people new to the sport (they do things differantly and that gets me thinking!

Now.. question for ya Rog: You mentioned that at Silver you choose CAMO clothes BUT have you tried the adverse and worn like a NEON orange and seen what would the effect be? Have you done consistant research on it or has anyone here?

...got me thinking... GREAT post Roger

Thats a GTREAT question Per!
I do have a fishing jacket that is bright red. I use this jacket lots of times! Why would I do that after all I said about dressing in camo. That jacket keeps me warm and I can move easly when I have it on. Red is the first color to fade when light is reduced. So I use the jacket in the morning and as the sun comes out I REMOVE IT. You will see in my "IFISH North Oregon Coast report" that I have the jacket (In the fish photos)on but when the sun came out it came off. This is even more important when you are fishing shallow for bass (and I do this alot!). Bass will hang out in shallower water than most of you would ever think. The key is COVER! like logs dock, something with shade! In the fall I put my rain outfit over the jacket to hide the color. Fall is BIG bass time!!!!!!

Great post Rog! I`ve long been a believer in natural colored clothing while fishing and have actually seen fish spooked by someone that was wearing bright colors. :hoboy: Good tips on the boating techniques also! Dern difficult to sneak up on the monsters as it is! Specially when banging around in a small metal boat. Pull up short and cast long and quiet! Seems like casting past the target spot and then dragging it back through the area also minimizes the noise. Just my 2 centavos worth. Ff

One more tip and it's the BIGGEST! Fish lots of times in the fall and fish all day. You odds will go through the roof if you are fishing a lake with BIG bass and fish it often !!!!!

The two BEST places to fish for bass in the FALL:

1. Silver Lake Wa. for L.M. Bass!
Best time to go is Oct 15 - Nov 7

2. Columbia River above The Dalles dam for S.M. Bass!
Best time to go is all of Oct - Nov.(good till around
thanks giving)

In the Fall Bass move shallow 1-6 feet at Silver Lake around the first of Oct. Near the fall turnover (3rd - 4th week in OCT) the bass will move out to deeper water 5-10 feet. Then pilings, log booms and docks can be red hot!
In the fall if you find a pattern it will hold for WEEKS!
This will help you catch lots more bass, as soon as you find a few pattern (i.e.. edge of the pads, on horizontal. logs, or piling shade. All have been very good fall patterns in the past. Each year is a bit different.

Yes Silver has a fall turn over! You can tell when this happens the color of the water will change from green to gray. The fish turn off for a day or two but start really hitting after that. In the fall if you are fishing with frost on your boats deck, thats big bass time!!!! The big problem then is keeping your hands warm    !!!!
