I went fishing with my nephew on the Siletz last evening. We had access to some private frontage between Ojalla and Morgan Park and we imagined we might exercise a summer steelhead, or at least a decent cutthroat or two. Alas, if there were any big fish there they stayed well hidden. All we found were some smolts, so we quit early and I drove back to Portland.
When I got into the car this morning the side windows were all smudged and smeared, like some sloppy person had tried to break into the car in the night. Eventually we figured out we were looking at cow slobber from having parked in the cow pasture on the bank of the Siletz. Why would cows lick a car?
It's bad when you get more hits from cows than from fish.

Why would cows lick a car?
That does seem highly odd, Jim. Of course, if by 'car' you are referring to your old truck, I could sorta see how they could mistake it for cud.

Actually, it was a fairly recent Chevy Metro. If the cows had tried to bite the Scout it might have bit back.

That's funny!
Well a metro is about the size of a cow..... and it is kind of a cute car.... is the car black and white by chance?

Had a similar incident on the Trask River on some Private Property. I parked my truck in the pasture for a quick walk down to the river. I came back to my truck about 3 hours later and saw that the drivers side mirror was hanging by its wires. Apparently a cow had used my mirror as a scratching post and broke it clean off of the side of my truck.
OUCH
Jim were the cows NOT licking your car big? :jester:

Yes, Stew, the cows not licking my car were big. The cows in that pasture were mostly all young heifers.

Was in Waldport over the weekend and decided to see about the Alsea River and if there was anything in there. I crossed the river at NF 58, I think, and went upstream. There were a couple minivans parked on some private property (pasture). As I was getting my stuff together, I noticed three or four cows hanging around these minivans. Then, to my amazement, I watched all of them start LICKING these vans!! They stood there for a few minutes, just licking away - mostly by the back and around the tail lights. Don't know what they were drawn to?
Found a camera later, but they were all done.

Darn, we almost had some action photos of cows licking cars. We could have a photo contest.
