If you had 2 newbies to fly fishing, 1 being a younger kid, would you take the people to the Deschutes somewhere? Or the Crooked River? I have heard if you want to catch a ton of fish go to the Crooked River but I dont know the best areas to catch the most fish and size does not matter, Thanks

How young is the young one? I've found the area around Cobble Rock to be rattler heaven this time of year. On the other hand, the midnite sky is a thing to behold......

Well shes 11 years old. I just want to bring them to a place where she can reel in some fish and there will be alot of action. Upper deschutes between Crane and Lava? I dont want to bring them to a place where she is off playing and a rattler gets her. Thanks

I would not take a young child say under 15 to the Lower Deschutes or to any large river.
If i wanted to get some newbies into some fish i'd take them to some small stream in the mountains where there are lots of little hungry cutts and bows..

Yeah thats why I asked if the UPPER deschutes would be a good little spot where its a nice small stream with alot of little bows waiting to feed?

try a lake.
there are so many to choose from.
Lakes are alot easier to learn to flyfish on...dead drift techniques will be learned later.

Yeah, I'd say I am in Mandinga's camp... especially out that way. Lots of good little lakes (a couple fly only too, IIRC) way up high so the water isn't too warm and should be teaming with little planters.

Twin Lakes would be my vote. The lake without the resortI forget if thats North or South) used to be quite good for pan sized trout. Nice beach that kids can play on when they get bored.
