View Full Version : J Kennedy Fisher blank question

About 25 years ago I wrapped a steelhead fly rod using a J Kennedy Fisher (I believe that's what it was) fiberglass blank. It is a wonderful rod and wonder how it compares to todays rod blanks. I believe it to be a 8 or 9 wt at 9 feet. The bottom line for me, as I want to do more fly fishing, is do I get a new generation rod for tossing a fly for steelies, or will this be just fine?

Thanks for any help that you might offer me. :applause:

I always thought they were o.k. blanks..not upper end but very adequate. If you like it..fish it. The finest casting rod I own is a 30 year old graphite made by Fenwick. I have lots of others inculding bamboo, but that 5 wt is still my favorite

Thanks GP,

I'll probably upgrade in the near future. The rod casts okay, and is fun playing a fish, but it feels a bit "buggy whippy" to me. I like a bit stiffer/faster action.

I have an old fisher glass rod a 9'6" 9wt. The fishers were very nice rods for their time

what you'll find in modern graphite rods is that they'll be lighter, stiffer and more expensive. some of them are worth the money some are not.

blanks are slightly harder to come by than they were 15 years ago as flyfishing became more and more popular fewer flyshops are catering to rod builders and only a few really cater to fly tiers..
most just wanna sell you a sage rod a ross reel and dome simms waders and push you out the door.. a carbon copy of the guy before you...

ok enough of my commentary on the fly fishing industry...

go cast some rods find out what you like then try to find a shop that carries the blank..
