I was driving through Bend yesterday and I decided to stop in a fly rod shop.
The guy's name is Francois, and his rods are beautiful! He didnt have exactly what I was looking for...which turned out to be a good thing. He said he would fully customize the rods for me...that meant that I got to pick the length, color, # of pieces, wrap colors, cork type, reel seat...EVERYTHING! AND I GET MY NAME ON THE RODS!
I ended up buying two rods because the guy was so nice and friendly.
When I get them I will post some pics.
here is what I got: 8'6" 4 weight medium fast action 3-piece
9' 7weight fast action, 3-piece.
Has anyone else ordered a totally custom rod before?
I have a couple Scott rods that were custom built for me. I got to choose the mandril and the flex characteristics of the rods including the type of graphite they used. They were finished with my name on them before varnishing. I have a 905 2 piece and a 908 4 piece. Both are incredibly light weight, but strong and powerful, mainly designed for throwing big flies on the Deschutes; the 5 for trout, the 8 for steelies.

Very nice pete, I had no idea that scott made custom rods.
I was like a kid in a candy store when he told me i could customize everything!
One of the main reasons I wanted something custom is bacause of my recent rod theft..if those rods had my name and custom color combos on them the thiefs may have thought twice about ripping them off.
Yes I had a very nice graphite rod custom made for me by Christian Brink

Scott doesn't do it anymore, since they moved to Colorado. But 15 years or so ago, they did make a limited number of customs.

I used to tie rods for a shop, at the time they were all loomis IM6, and we had many a repeat customer. I quit doing all that a long time ago, but I don't have a rod that I fish that I havn't built for myself. I get a lot of satisfaction picking out all the parts and putting it all together myself. Custom is the only way to go.
