Took my first trout fishing trip since moving to Oregon  on Friday and had a great time. I can't tell where I went since I promised the persons that PM'd me I wouldn't give away their spot, but it was a northern stream along the coast!. Since I promised a report for the info, here goes.

I got to the water about 3:30 pm and started fishing. For almost the entire time I used a olive reverse spider. My second cast caught an 8 in cutthroat  My next cast caught one slightly smaller than the first. After messing with the small ones for a little bit, I moved upstream since I was afraid I would hurt the little ones (I caught 1 that was about the same size as my fly). At the head of the pool I caught a 15 in trout that I think was a searun (it was quite bright, mostly silver) and got another 1 up to me that was a little bigger. I hooked about 3 more nice ones in the same spot but lost them.

I should metion that I got there too late since when I got there the caddis were swarming on the water when I got there, but mostly died down around 5. The few caddis that were still left were getting swarmed by little cutthroat, so I thought about switching to a dry, but I didn't want to catch to many small ones. It was fun to watch though, especially one really large caddis (I think it was a caddis, there were only a few of these, over an inch long and kinda of pale yellow, but they flew like caddis) which hit the water right next to me and got gobbled by a little 8 in cutthroat. Some of those little cuts were literaly jumping clear out of the water trying to get those caddis flies! It was quite entertaining. About 5 pm I left the first pool, but the fishing wasn't too good after that. Lots of small cutts, but no large searuns.

Anyway, I had a great time. Thanks for the advice on where to go.

I guess I'm going to have to quit telling people about where I'm having success since this is the attitude that some are going to take :hoboy:
Listen guys SRC fishing with a fly is not exactly an over populated pursuit now is it? I've shared with alot of people specifically where to go and what to use and have benefited from others sharing with me but maybe that will change from now on.
Patrick if you promised not to tell then keep your word but to the person(s) that is being so hush-hush especially when others have shared so freely on this board then.....

Haven't caught a searun in ages. The north coast might be worth the drive for a good "Searun Cutthroat Almondine", - mmm....yummy! (sorry, just had to "cast a dry fly" to see if I can get a rise out of Stew!!!)

Thanks for the report.

I don't see how saying a northern stream on the coast is telling anything.

Glad you had some sucess.

Patrick L obviously got some good advice. He is also a gentleman, a sportsman and a man of his word!

The subject of protecting your fishing spots has already been discussed:

Let’s just appreciate Patrick’s great day on the river.

With your permission Andy  I'm bringing it up again. As one who is not afraid to share their trout spots with anyone I fail to see why a cutthroat spot is so friggin' secret. I understand salmon or steelhead secrecy but cutthroat? Give me a break! I just guess my ego doesn't work that way
Yes Patrick by all means keep your word. My trout spots on the coast are available to anyone who wants to know and they can share with their fly fishing friends...the more the merrier :yay:
Silverfly I've heard that cutthroat tastes really good

Sorry, the only digital camera we have is my wife's, and if I dropped it in the water I wouldn't need a camera since it would be awhile before she would let me go fishing again.

Nice report Patrick!

If you went to the place that I told you about, no need to keep it secret. I suppose that I did send a PM, so I can see why you would have gotten that impression.

Necanicum river just downstream (about 3/4 mile) from the largest Sitka Spruce tree in the US. It's no secret spot, I've seen it mentioned on iFish before.

The only problem with your report was that you did better than I did when I went there!

Well as it was pointed out to me last time I posted on this same location, it is the second largest Sitka Spruce tree in the US. I know the sign says it’s the largest but there is one other one just a bit taller in Washington, I believe.

It is a nice little stretch of water. I only got to fish it for two hours or so but it was a kick. I hope to get back down that way sometime later this year and give it another, go through.

Nothing like watching the little guys come out of the water to get a bug that is an inch or two above the surface.

I fished that spot last Thursday for about an hour...no luck
No luck at the Trask 101 take out area that I fish either but got a couple of smallish cutts on the lower Wilson just above MP6.
The fish were hanging in the upper part of a riffle
