I have fished and caught Kokanee with a fly in Lake Billy Chinook.

I used a fast sinking wet line, the fly patterns were designed after some of the popular jigs and small wobblers commonly used by trollers.

I was fishing with a friend who tied professionally and was wanting to develope a new line of flys.

They were weighted and un weighted. Most were size 12 long shank with flashabo, fairly simple patterns.

It was cast, let it sink and rapidly strip. We got lots of hits and hookups, hard to keep them on, but lots of fun. We landed a few each day.

We fished the fall when they move into the shallow river channels.

I also caught several last year at East Lake using the same method. It was on the south side, just NE of the boat ramp, under the pumice/mudd/gravel bolders. I did not keep any, there are not to many left in East Lake and I did not want to reduce the population.

In canada lakes I have caught a lot of kokanees in certain lakes but not others. Why I don't know sometimes these lakes are only a few miles apart from each other. The fly fishing time is for a short period when the may flies are hatching in great numbers. We fish the drift lines of the may flies with floating lines and extended body #10-#14 mayflies. When the hatch slows down we switch to pheasant tail nymphs and pick up a few. I have never tried it down here as I have not observed any risers in lakes I fish that have Kokanee. Only explanation I have for why it works so well in some lakes is that the May Fly hatch is so overwelming the fish have to his that buffet line. Any one else experience this?
