I plan to fly fish for fall Chinook but don't have a lot of experience do this. What are some of the successful techniques you have used to catch chinook on the fly?

Step One: Find Chinook

Step two: Put fly in front of Chinook.

I hate to be over simplistic, but those are the two most important steps!

Step two will depend on where the fish are located. If they are in a “run” then swing a fly in front of the fish, as close to their level as possible. That usually requires a sink tip line.

If the Chinook are in pocket water or a large hole, a nymphing presentation will work best (with or without an indicator).

If the fish are in an estuary or bay, you will need to cast the fly over the fish and retrieve it past the Chinook. This usually requires a full sinking line. The sink rate of the sinking line will depend on the depth of the fish.

The Aug-Sept 2004 issue of STS has an article about the guys fishing from prams for chinook in southern Oregon tidewater, including the story of the 78 lb. record fish.

Step One: Find Chinook

Step two: Put fly in front of Chinook.

Step 3: Feel grab.

Step 4: Lift rod.

Step 5: Watch backing disappear.

Step 6: Pull anchor.

Step 7: Have fishing buddy row arms off.

Step 8: Apply pressure until you have to switch arms.

Step 9: Repeat step 8 until fish is at boat.

Step 10: Net fish (or release).

Step 11: Take a long break!

Step 12: Come home and take a shower to wash off chinook stink.

---

We were chasing tidewater coho today when I re-enacted "The Old Man and the Sea" (actually more like "Fat Guy and the Frog Water"). Finally landed a 32lb chinook after giving my new 10wt a workout!

OK, but don't say I didn't warn ya! Yes it's a big "bronzy" tule . No smart alecky comments from you Wobbler guys catching those fat, shiny URB's. Just keeping one for the smoker (and as far as Andy knows the eggs are getting tossed !)

Okay Silverfly, congratulations :applause:!

At least you are perfecting your Chinook techniques !
Aren't you glad now you have that ten weight? Seems like your ten-weight is getting a lot of salmon action for you this year.

I am not an expert on this but i know some...i have caught 1 springer on an optic and 1 fall on a homemade streamer. If you are fishing slack tidewater (bobber water) i would use a 9wt clear tip intermediate line with large streamers striped in with short jerks. If you are fishing the rivers i would use a 9wt 10ft fast sinking tip line with large bright wet flys or a 10wt wf floating with weighted streamers. You can also use a full sinking line if you fish the target water from an upstream position...i use a 9 wt fenwick eagle rod with a scientific anglers system 2 reel.A good idea is too buy a reel that you change line on quickly to match conditions.Good luck.

Thanks man, I will call you when it's time. I've seen quite a few fish around but I've been pre-occupied by elk to concentrate on anything with a fly. That will change next week. I haven't informed the wife about that one yet...... :flowered: Are you taking that PE yet?
