My new to me (95) Caulkins trailer has original tail lites. Previous owner had grease on the contacts of the bulb to fixture. They are like new. Will any grease do or is there a special kind? I like the look of the LED lites but sounds like some of you are having trouble so will stick with the maintanance of the old ones for now.

I'M NOT A COMPLETE IDIOT!
SOME PARTS ARE MISSING!!

Vaseline has been mentioned......I'd probably use dielectric (tune-up) grease, or maybe Sil-Glyde.

I've found Dielectric Grease works very well, is stickier and more staying power than vaseline, and not as messy as a lubricating grease. It is available at automotive stores/sections, and is inexpensive.

I smear a coating on and in EVERYTHING that can get corroded, paying particular attention to the bulb base, the bulb socket, and electrical wires.

I also use it to coat outdoor bulb bases, like floodlights, to make it easier to remove when the time comes.

Vaseline was the only item used to coat all bus bars, battery connections of every sort by the Telephone company on all of there DC connections. Then some one came up with No Oxide. It's a messy item to work with but they will all work so there shouldn't be any disagrement about what to use. It's just important to use something as you are certianly sure to have a problem if you don't coat the connection with something.

Trailer lights have been a problem on trailers for a long time. I check them before every trip. To see if the turn signals work, brake lights work and flashing lights work.

LED lights seem to be a major improvement on lights and help solve some of the problems with the bulb type lights.

Seldom do I see a boat trailer on the road that all the lights are working correctly. There is usually one burned out or something wrong some place. So check them every trip.
Good Luck.

Just a note of thanks to you and all else who took and take the time to share your knowledge. When I first started fishing about five years ago I knew nothing. First time out for Salmon I used worms. Alot of what I am learning is from folks like you.

Thanks much
