Ok, let's get the obvious out of the way first... The only thing that has really been slamming with regard to coho is fishermans fists into their palms. Coho this year has been abysmal. Guys are picking up some kings, but none of the daily fishers have been targeting the fishery.
What's the problem? Mainly lack of good solid baitfish in the area. Until this week, the water temp was rediculously high, and now with a non-stop NW blow, the water has cooled to about 46 degrees just outside Depoe Bay.
So, no coho. What else? Bottom fishing has remained HOT! The bag limit of Rockfish dropped from 8 to 5 (plus 2 Lings) just recently due to the demand and the great action on the bottom fishing. This weeks recent batch of weather brought a slight slowdown to the fishing being red-hot EVERYWHERE around Depoe Bay for bottomfish, but certainly didn't turn off the bite completely. A little more effort has been required to find the schools of fish that are biting, but every day has still seem limits produced for everyone.
Crabbing has stayed excellent as far as producing a lot of numbers, though the shells have been a mixed bag. The average crab seems to have a "medium" hardness to the shell.
Tuna fishing was patchy but strong right up until this last blow. Our first trip out we scored 12 fat porkers. With the recent cool down in water temp crews looking for fish will be scattered for a few days, but defined water breaks should start to consolidate the spread groups of tuna.
We still have a couple weekend days left in August for halibut or tuna, but not much. If interested, it would be best to check now for availability.
Tight lines!
