It might not matter either way but i got to thinking last night (scary thought) When tying a fly to your leader do you go from under or over the eye? Or does it make any difference.

Thanks

not sure as long as the fly holds when you get that hog on your line.

I usually come in from the top. I guess then the line is kind of point more up toward the surface. I don't really have a reason behind it.

I come in from the top. It just feels more natural than trying to string the line up from the bottom of the eye.

I think it is more personal preference than anything else.

over or under?

Pheww... I thought we were reduced to discussing tp preferences here.

Not sure if I am missing something here... but when I cinch the knot, the tippet rotates so the line is neither over nor under.

btw, definitely under if you have small kids... that way when they spin the tp it doesn't come all unraveled... seriously.

Because I tie an improved clinch knot, it makes absolutely no difference. With one of the looser loop type knots, there might be some tiny difference in fly action. I would guess this is one of those microscopic details that matters to some but really shouldn't, somewhat akin to those that say a certain fly has to have five wraps of tinsel vs four.

Good tip on the tp. I'll use that with Gracie. She has a knack for unrolling a bunch, which in turn invites either the cat or the dog to further distribute it.

Thanks for the opinions.

I also thought that since I was using the improved clinch knot that it didn’t really matter. Just wanted to make sure that it wasn’t the difference in catching fish and catching big fish.

You can never be to careful.

While I go which ever way is easiest at the time, I could see some advantages of starting your knot by threading the hook "under" style when dry fly fishing. My reasoning is because this may put your knot and leader a little closer to the water when the fly floats, making the tippet sink easier, therefore being less visable to fish. But in all honesty, I think if there is any advantage going under, it's so minute that it really doesn't matter.

Contemplate THAT one for a few minutes!

Just to clarify lilnorthfork, the proper way to have the roll on the holder os so that it unrolls from the top.....
or so my fiancee tells me.
