I ran across an old magazine article about these things. They are tied on a hook with standard materials and use an overbody/shellback(?) of closed cell foam strip. The leading edge extends past the hook eye kinda similar to a flatfish bill causing the fly to wiggle(like a flatfish) when retrieved. Seems like it could be effective in a minnow or a crayfish pattern. Have tied a few but have yet to get one wet other than in the tub trying it out.
A second part of this would be is this truly a "fly" as it imparts it's own action. Probably opened a can of worms on this one but what the heck, I am not known for leaving cans of worms closed(can I say can of worms on this board?). My own thought is yes as it is made from traditional materials and methods, but that is just an opinion roughly formed.
Anyway, just looking to see if anyone else is familiar with them.
