My Brother-n-law and I headed down last Friday for a weekend of bass fishing. We started out fishing Cooper Crk Lake Friday evening, and had a rough start. We scratched out about 10 small fish and that was it, but Saturday was our big Umpqua float.

Our plan was to float from James Wood to Osprey. We hit the river at about 6:30am and set off for a great day. Our first couple of fish came off of topwater, and from than on we we started to get into fish. We threw everything at them, and the only thing I threw that did not catch fish was a firetiger rattle trap, but everything else caught at least a couple. As usual the most fish came off of smaller plastics, but we caught a couple of really nice ones off of jigs and cranks. I lost count after 50 fish by noon. The only down side to the trip was the hole I got in the seam of my pontoon boat that would not hold a patch or anything else we rapped around it. Needless to say I did a lot of stopping and pumping up the pontoon. Also, forgot the camera in the truck. Our biggest fish was around 2 1/2 lbs., but we caught several in the 1-1 1/2 lbs range and a couple of two pounders, and a lot of dinks. Of course I lost the big one, I had a really big one on for quite a while until he jumped and threw my plastic worm out of his mouth. The only reedemption was the oohs and aaws from the people around me as they saw the monster spit my worm! My favorite technique for the day was side drifting in the seams of the current. Caught a lot of big ones doing that. One other note on this float is that it took us 12 solid hours to make this float, and we hurried in a lot of areas. The day was beautiful and we saw a lot of wildlife (deer, skunks, racoons, turkeys, turtles, and a crazy Osprey). The osprey had fun with us for a little while, even if he did not know it. He was nailing fish right in front of us it was awesome. Did not run into anyone from I-Fish that I could tell. Did any of you guys make it?

On a final note we hit Cooper Creek on Sunday Morning before we left, and really did well. It was overcast, and the fish were on the bite. We found them up really tight to the bank and managed around 25 fish a piece for the morning. Caught two really nice ones, one about 3 1/2 lbs and one pushing 4lbs. The others were around 1lb to 1lb 1/2. How did everyone else do this last weekend?

Myself and Damien fished this weekend. Saturday we started at Osprey and went to the sandbar. Catching was consistant most of the day with nightcrawlers and small grubs taking most of the fish. I think Damien got a couple to the boat over 14", but the overall size of of the fish were small compared to previous years.

Sunday we drifted from the sandbar to Yellow Creek. With the cloudy conditions, the fishing wasn't as good but consistant.

Overall it was a great time and I look forward to hitting it again next year.

How was that float in comparison to James Wood to Osprey? How many hours did it take you to do the entire float? I think I know which sandbar you are talking about, you must have camped. If you did, did you try any night fishing?

Great report! I have a dumb question but were you catching Smallies or largemouth or both?? Thanks!

Most likely smallies. They tend to like rivers much more than the largies.

IslandBass,
We were catching Smallies on the Umpqua River and Largemouth at Cooper Creek Lake. It was a nice mixed bag of decent fish.

I've never done James Wood to Osprey. I would like to though.

From Osprey to Sandbar you could make it a good days drift or make it down in a few hours, depending how hard you fish.

Sandbar to Yellow Creek is a bit shorter, which is a good drift on Sunday before we pack up camp and head home.
