Smaller (#4-) inline spinners such as Vibraxes, Roostertails, and #7 Shad Raps will catch both trout and bass. If you like to use bait, few fish can resist a night crawler wacky-rigged with a #2 circle hook and weighted with just enuf to slowly sink. Search this board for more specifics on bass lures.
It's a big river so work the seams, especially where the eddies flow back into the main current.

Otis,
Listen to BuKu he's right on the mark w/ the inline spinners. The lower Hells canyon is slower deeper water w/ many coves and eddys. The are also shallow reefs at the head of these eddys w/ fast white water that can hold trout as well. Also fish anywhere a creek comes in for trout. They like the cooler oxygenated water and tend to school up. In some of the larger coves where a creek comes in (the ones with good gravel bottoms), the trout will actually spawn on. They school up much like kokanee do and a little kernal of corn will do the trick.

If you guys pull into Dug Bar or Deep Ck, toss a 1/6oz Black Roostertail around in the coves and shallows. Ask your guide as well. I'm sure he's also a wealth of info.

Catch & Release for over sized sturgeon is also great down around Deep Ck. I grew up over that way and our family frequently floated/rafted Hells. Dad had a 14ft 2pc sturgeon pole we would strap to the raft frame for bank fishing from camp. We hooked into a monster one time that took my Pop, brother & I three rotations each before Dad finally broke it off. Was light when we started the battle and camp finally brought lanterns over before we broke it off. Just after I hooked it (I was showing dad a trick w/ bass guts and Bubble Yum bubble gum) it came to surface and came ~1/3 out before rolling over on it's back. HUGE!!! It's head alone was about 2 to 2-1/2ft dia and I'd say about 4-5ft of it came out of the water. I can still see that monster etched in my mind. I wish we could have landed it but it was just too big for our 60lb mono and spinning reel. We never really had a chance with it. It just went up and down the pool and we just toyed w/ it........ or should I say IT toyed w/ us!! Anyway take a stiff sturgeon rod and save some bass guts and take a little gauze & rubber bands to wrap the guts. Your sure to hook up w/ some fun. Just remember ...Deep Creek our hawg hole.
Man your gonna have fun!

Thanks Walley

I already got my obversize sturgy fill this year on the Columbia (great upper body workout)....so I think we are gonna leave the heavy gear at home. We are trying to keep the equipment down to a minimum because we have 3 people on a 22 foot Thunder Jet.

I cant wait to give bass fishin a try I'm a total rookie at that.
